How to stop being needy

2020.11.07 23:53 anonymouscausefuckU How to stop being needy

One thing on the Nick Notas PUA blog that I found interesting and relatable is that desperation is in the mind; it isn’t enough to try and not come off as desperate, you have to genuinely not be desperate. How do you do this? I have a history of depression and had a very socially isolated upbringing with a dysfunctional family and I have a bad habit of letting women become a sort of emotional security blanket for me. This tends to put them off, and I know that, and yet I find it very difficult to not repeat doing it. I’ll try to hide it but it’ll still come out one way or another.

2018.09.10 03:34 boddsodkins Should I (M23) reinitiate text convo with this incredible girl (22F) after radio silence? Is it better to drop it?

I know this can be pretty cringey territory sometimes, so I wanted to see what others thought.
A few weeks back I (M23) was browsing OKCupid and came across the most beautiful, endearing girl (22F) I had ever encountered in my two months of online dating. I'm an INTJ, she's an ENFP. We had a 96% compatibility rate, and I loved everything she wrote about herself in her profile. I messaged her, but OKCupid is stupid with messaging so I didn't expect much to come of it.
A few days later, she shows up in my "suggested contacts" list on Facebook because we have mutual friends. I knew this could be a real opportunity to let her know I exist, but I also know this is real murky territory for creepy stalkers as well. After consulting a few friends, I took a page out of a Jordan Gray blog post I read about how he met his girlfriend through Facebook. I wrote her a message telling her she seemed like the most amazing girl I had ever come across, and I just wanted her to feel encouraged even if she didn't reply. I doubted she would accept a message request from a stranger who she had already turned down on OKCupid, but I thought it was worth a shot.
And it turns out: A WEEK LATER SHE REPLIED! She sent me a series of five long messages expressing how grateful she was for my message and how she really needed to hear that. She pointed out the mutual connections we share (which required a little digging on my own profile), and asked me some questions. I admit I wasn't smart about texting and may have betrayed too much enthusiasm, but I didn't want to play game with this girl.
After a few messages she kind of disengaged and went silent after I asked a question. However, she followed up the next day briefly, so I shot her another reply. Because I was planning out my weekend at that point I decided to send her a second message after that asking her out to join me on a weekend outing. That was on Thursday. She hasn't opened the message yet.
So now I'm trying to figure out if I should just drop it or not. Here's the reasons on each side:

Why I should drop it:
(1) She kinda let the conversation fizzle out
(2) She didn't open my message when she saw I had asked her out, if she was interested she definitely would have replied by now
(3) She was being polite to acknowledge how nice my original message was but doesn't want to connect more than that
(4) Trying again will come across as clingy and needy

Why I should give it another try:
(1) My ENFP friends are incredibly bad at texting, responding, or following up even though we get along great. She may have just gotten distracted and forgotten. For most people this is a sign of interest, ENFPs are pretty scatter-brained though.
(2) She responded really well to my initial message and I think we were getting along well. I know a lot of girls have a hard time getting interested until they meet someone in person, so I just need to push for that chance.
(3) It's not always bad to follow up on radio silence, especially when you've got such a great connection. Nick Notas has an article encouraging to offer a follow up a few days later as long as you're not weird about it.
(4) I have never gotten such a great vibe from someone's online profile (I'm a little over dismissive sometimes), and I think we would just click really well if we had gotten the chance. I don't know the next time I will have this kind of connection, so I don't want this opportunity to go to waste if there was something more I can do about it.

I invest a lot of time into my hobbies, and I really do enjoy the life I have been given. She seems too as well, and I think it would be great if we could share in that together. I have never felt so compelled to reach out to someone before which is why I have put so much thought into it (first time I've ever had this feeling). I just want to make sure I've given it my all before moving on.
TL;DR Reachedd out to this incredible girl online that I had connections with, she responded really well but went silent. Should I try reinitiating conversation? Is it better to just leave it?

2018.05.27 04:49 Fukyamaite I've never actually seen the kind of guy the internet dating experts want you to be in real life

Whether it's Nick Notas, Dr Nerdlove and all the other blogs/youtube authors out there who are dating "experts." The kind of guy they are encouraging all of us to be in order to be successful with women, I've never actually seen this guy exist in real life. And of all the successful guys I've seen who were good with women and who are in successful relationships with quality women, they aren't like this guy either.
This guy they want us all to be is almost a reactionary towards some extreme example of a nice guy. It's like they took the most pushover nice guy ever and invented his polar opposite.
Most guys I've known in my life who are in good relationships are nice guys. They do nice things for people out of default, assuming the best in someone. If that someone betrays their trust or they find out some things they don't like about the person, they then keep their distance but before that happens, they give people benefit of the doubt. There's none of this manipulation crap or purposely being mean in order to get something out of the other person.
They are also decent looking. Don't have to be tall and handsome but they look nice and dress neatly. They seem comfortable in their own skin. They are also very socially aware and know how to behave in social situations accordingly. This doesn't mean they're catering to everyone and trying to please everyone. They generally do what they want to do but they also are aware that certain social situations have unwritten rules.
The "nice guy" everyone loves to hate is overly friendly and seems to want to please everyone and be everybody's best friend. The guy the internet dating coaches want you to be seems to be this aloof asshole who just goes around offending people via sarcasm or jokes at the expense of others. This doesn't charm women at all. I don't know of many women who find this behavior attractive no matter how good looking he is.
I think the good guys that women want tend to just have a good sense of who they are and they live their life true to themselves. They also are socially aware and know how to be gracious. They are seeking compatibility, whether it's for friendship or dating-wise. They aren't trying to be some social butterfly but aren't trying to be some aloof, mysterious dickhead either.
I'm not trying to preach here. I honestly want to get people's thoughts on this. There's like an explosion of dating advice out there which means that a lot of people seem to have the same questions, which is, what does it take to be good with women these days? But from a real life perspective, I just don't see the guy they want you to be in real life.

2017.12.28 16:16 junsandoval An interview with Moira Lang about the MMFF --by Irish Dizon (posted on March 24, 2017)

Ripped out of Facebook since bawal mag link from FB. (Long post ahead) Get some chips or something.
Hello, friends!
It's been a while since I posted anything socio-political in nature on this page. I know a lot of things have been happening, but I deliberately kept quiet because the last thing we need online is another MEMA posting her knee-jerk reaction to the most pressing issues of the day.
That said, after days of researching and thinking, I would like to open a nice can of juicy worms tonight. I believe this issue is just as important as what's going on on the political front. Its adverse effects on the Filipino people is just as terrible, albeit more insidious.
I am talking about the recent shake-up in the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) Official Executive Committee.
If you have been following me for a while now, you'd know that I was one of the staunchest supporters of #MMFF2016. FINALLY, a line-up we deserved. I had high hopes that the reforms—nothing short of revolutionary!—instigated by the MMFF 2016 executive committee would be carried over to this year's festival...
Until March 8, 2017, 5:24 PM. Oh di ba? May oras!
I was scrolling through my Twitter timeline when I saw Moira Lang's "I wish the new Execom well" tweet. (See screenshot below.) I was shocked to say the least. I do not know her personally but at the height of our (I.e., me and like-minded people who were promoting the 8 MMFF 2016 movies via our social media accounts) despair last December—despair because theaters kept pulling out the films—she was with us, tirelessly encouraging viewers to give the movies, especially the bottom four, a chance; answering our extended-ba-o-hindi questions patiently. I could FEEL her passion to give the Filipino audience quality movies. I hate to resort to this cliche but it's true: Real recognizes real.
The late-night news program "Bandila" picked up this scoop and reported it. The slant was: "PRO-INDIE FILM MEMBERS REMOVED FROM MMFF EXECOM."
Now, if you're a passive viewer, you'd brush this off as just another unfortunate development in this godforsaken country, but take note of the headline: "PRO-INDIE FILM MEMBERS REMOVED..." 1. How...presumptuous. I wonder: How do they even KNOW Moira and Ed are pro-indie? 2. The word removed implies INCOMPETENCE, no?
If there's one thing I learned from ateng Sass Rogando Sasot and ateng MOCHA USON BLOG (are you shocked? Don't be. You CAN pick up things even from people you disagree with), it's how you must always question the news mainstream agencies feed you. Newsmen and women, ideally, ought to be impartial, and in the words of Joseph Pulitzer, "accurate, accurate, accurate." But truth is, newsmen work for corporations that have businesses, personal interests to protect—they're essentially foot soldier following orders. Unless they're particularly headstrong. In most cases, the headstrong are sacked.
In a Facebook post, Moira said she doesn't blame the newscasters: "At most, nakuryente sila. Pinag-isipan. Pinagplanuhan."
Taking inspiration from Ms. Inday Espina-Varona, a journalist I respect, I decided to "go to the source," and asked Moira if I could interview her. She said yes.
After spending hours with her, followed by follow-up questions coursed through Facebook Messenger, the story is here. I hope you read it in its entirety. I had to tell this story for this purpose:
To tell Moira's and Edward Delos Santos Cabagnot's side
To give you, an ordinary Filipino and moviegoer, an idea as to what REALLY happens behind closed (MMFF) doors
And in doing so: to hopefully make you give a damn about this year's–and the future–MMFFs. Films reflect AND shape this nation's soul.
Handa ka na? Stay tuned for the next posts.
"It was a consequence of the scandal, the #MMFF2015 scandal involving 'Honor Thy Father,'" Moira Lang told me. If I can digress for a moment, she was wearing a pineapple print dress, her hair was lightly tousled, and she had no makeup on save for a swipe of crimson on her lips. I noticed that she speaks very fast (giving you a glimpse into how quick her brain works) but her thoughts are clear and logical, evidently coming from an intelligent mind. She also has a penchant for summarizing her arguments, eyes up, fingers ticking off her points. It was my first time to personally meet her, even though, without me knowing, she was a very big part of my growing up years.
"Sino ba si Moira Lang," maybe some of you are wondering. Do the movies "Anak," "Tanging Yaman," "Kailangan Kita," "Milan," "D'Anothers," and "In My Life" ring a bell? How about "Sarong Banggi," "Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros," "Endo," "Kimmy Dora," "Zombadings: Patayin sa Shokot si Remington," and "Norte: Hangganan ng Kasaysayan"? Yes, Virginia. Moira Lang wrote/co-wrote/produced/co-produced/was involved in all those films—each compelling in its own way. I only discovered she co-wrote my all-time favorite Star Cinema movie "Anak" last year, with sir Ricky Lee, during a Twitter DM chismisan with a friend, tago natin sa pangalang Shinji Elleazar Manlangit. "Moira is legit," he told me. And you only have to look at her filmography to know he speaks truthfully.
Teka fumafaney na ko. 😂 Let's go back to the incident that sparked the major, MUCH-NEEDED changes in the Metro Manila Film Festival last year: the #MMFF2015 scandal involving "Honor Thy Father," directed by Erik Matti.
To cut the long story short: On December 26, 2015, a day before the MMFF 2015 Awards Night, news broke that Erik Matti's beautiful and devastating "Honor Thy Father" was disqualified from the Best Picture category. (Full disclosure: Nagwala ako at maraming taong gaya ko sa Twitter.)
Bakit?
May nilabag daw na rule: "An entry film shall not have been, in any way, commercially exhibited here and/or abroad."
The point of contention: "Honor Thy Father" was shown at the CinemaOne Global Film Festival held on November 8, 2015 and it was "unknown to MMFF."
Dondon Monteverde, producer of "Honor Thy Father," refuted this with matching receipts.
A. Contrary to that "unknown to MMFF" claim, Dondon's team informed the MMFF that HTF was going to be screened at the CinemaOne Film Festival. He produced two letters dated November 4 and 5. In response, the MMFF camp said they received the letter on November 6, "not giving the MMFF enough time to deliberate on the matter." Still, they KNEW.
B. Dondon also produced a document from CinemaOne that proves that the screening of "Honor Thy Father" was "non-revenue generating and by invitation only." NOTA BENE: The rule says, "An entry film shall not have been, in any way, commercially exhibited here and/or abroad." Strictly speaking, "commercially" means "concerned with earning money." Dondon and team did NOT earn a single cent from that special screening.
As the "lightest sanction," the board decided to disqualify the film from the most important category. ANEK. DISQUALIFICATION FROM THE PLUM PRIZE, LIGHT BA YON?
That hullabaloo led to a series of hearings at the congress, and Moira attended each one, and "really paid attention sa mga nangyayari." The hearings would expose many anomalies in the MMFF's system. Let Moira count the ways:
✖️ "May mga people dun na held too many positions and talagang sobrang influence sa pagpapatakbo ng festival to the point na the selection was a joke, it was just for show. Wala naman talagang totoong criteria or process. It was all palakasan tsaka fake. Si Philbert Dy had a whole article about it sa Esquire Philippines." You may read it here: http://www.esquiremag.ph/…/confessions-mmff-selection-commi…
At tsaka totally wrong yung pag instruct ng two members of the executive committee, sina Marichu Maceda and Dominic Du, sa board of judges during the awards night na wag bigyan ng score ang 'Honor Thy Father' for Best Picture. They did that na wala pa namang resolution yung executive committee."
✖️ "Lumabas din yung corruption sa finances. May mga reklamo from the beneficiaries. [Note: Part ng kinikita sa taunang MMFF ay napupunta sa mga local film institutions gaya ng Film Development Council of the Philippines, Mowelfund Institute, etc.] For example, the Film Academy of the Philippines. Si Leo Martinez (head of the FAP) is very vocal. Siya yung nagsasalita against the corrupt practices of the MMFF before, yung hindi binibigay sa kanila what is due them. Malaki yung bawas."
✖️"May lumabas din na thing about cash gifts na questionable, cash gifts to former chairmen of the MMFF, etc."
And that's not even all of it.
"Hindi nga fully na exhaust yung investigation," Moira said. After those hearings, Marichu Maceda and Dominic Du, the two MMFF 2015 executive committee members who instructed the jury not to score "Honor Thy Father" for Best Picture, left. "Tapos nun, may tumawag sa akin to invite me [to be part of the MMFF 2016 executive committee]," Moira says.
What followed was a radical change in the MMFF system.
To be continued.
Why were Moira Lang and Ed Cabagnot REALLY removed from the MMFF executive committee?
First, an introduction. From my previous post, you already know who Moira is, but what about professor Edward Delos Santos Cabagnot? "He was also with experimental cinema of the Philippines in the 1980s, and he was with CCP for 30 years, parang ganun, before he left CCP. And now he's teaching."
The #MMFF2016 executive committee was assembled under the watch of then-MMDA (and therefore MMFF) Chairman Emerson Carlos. "Matapang yun," Moira says. Now is the time to make it clear: The good changes that happened in the 2016 Metro Manila Film Festival happened at the tail-end of Emerson Carlos' tenure. "Mr. Carlos was our Chairman until August 2016. By then, all the crucial and most positive changes, the biggest gains, the legacy of MMFF 2016 were firmly in place. These were: a total disavowal of the 'mainstream-indie' dichotomy; the wording of and commitment to the festival's Vision and Mission; the adoption of a new, more well-rounded, and tangible set of criteria; the installation of a Selection Committee whose members' credentials and integrity are above reproach; the resolution that rendered untouchable the allocated funds for the beneficiaries, a 360-degree turn from the practice of previous MMFF administrations to deplete said funds for operating expenses; and, the most talked about and hotly contested, the change of the basis of selection from script to finished film. These were hard-fought victories, all won before Mr. Orbos stepped in," clarifies Moira.
Last year's execom was a mixed bag of old-timers (I.e., Veteran actress/Movie Workers Welfare Foundation president Boots Anson-Roa, producer Jesse Ejercito, Motion Picture Distributors Association of the Philippines president Wilson Tieng) and new faces. Aside from Moira and Ed, Senator Sonny Angara and Quezon City 2nd District Representative Alfred Vargas were also new additions to the board. In fact, Vargas was one of the legislators "na umupo dun sa investigation ng [#MMFF2015 scandal] sa congress," Moira says.
But there's a pero.
"Pero hindi sila uma-attend ng meetings. Nagpapadala sila ng representatives." Like Moira and Ed, Angara and Vargas are no longer part of the MMFF executive committee this year–but you don't see headlines screaming "PRO INDIE LEGISLATORS REMOVED FROM MMFF EXECOM." It's like we were singled out talaga."
In an interview with Business World, MMFF spokesperson Noel Ferrer explained the removal of Moira and Ed from the board: "The members of the MMFF executive committee only have 'one year' tenure except for the representatives of the beneficiaries, the MTRCB, the Bureau of Broadcasts and NCRPO (National Capital Region Police Office). It's made clear to everyone from the start." Source: https://www.pressreader.com/…/busi…/20170317/282196535765397
Moira says this is "a deceitful answer."
"Only ex officio members, those who have a seat on the MMFF executive committee by virtue of them heading organizations such as the MTRCB, FDCP, Mowelfund, PNP, are assured of a seat year after year," Moira stresses. "If we were taken out because of the so-called one-year limit, how come most of the non-ex officio members were retained and keep getting renewed for over a decade?"
To add insult to injury, Moira and Ed found out they were axed "from people NOT connected to the MMFF." No one from the MMFF sat them down or heck, kahit tawag o text man lang, to tell them their respective tenures were over. "I haven't heard from the MMFF up to now. It's the same with Ed Cabagnot. No one got in touch with him either," Moira says. She'd like to ask incumbent MMDA Chairman Tim Orbos why she and Ed were singled out, "in person, if possible." But she has a few guesses.
✔️ "Ed and I were thoroughly earnest and transparent about helping turn the festival around, clarifying its vision, mission, and objectives and staying true to them, cleaning up the selection process, and doing away with the ridiculous and regressive dichotomy of 'mainstream vs indie.' Maybe some of our colleagues–maybe the Chairman himself –weren't/wasn't used to this and found it overbearing or threatening."
✔️ "Ed didn't mince his words in his social media postings as he expressed his disappointment, sometimes disgust, with how some cinemas treated some of the entries, how a certain studio and again some cinemas shot down even the proposal to offer a discount on ticket prices to students, senior citizens, and PWDs. I shared his posts, echoed his sentiments, and expressed some (not all, as I held back, choosing to pick up the fight inside the Execom rather than outside) of my own."
✔️ "It's not a stretch to say that we ruffled more than a few feathers. At Execom meetings I didn't back down from arguing with colleagues–not just fellow Execom members but also, frequently, MMFF Executive Director Atty. Rochelle Ona–on points I deemed crucial, for instance the January 7 vs. January 3 debate, or the duration of the fest suddenly being cut by four extremely precious days."
✔️"A few days ago somebody told me that Mr. Orbos had said that he wasn't comfortable with how 'powerful' Ed and I had become. Apparently he cited our closeness with some members of the Selection Committee and the Board of Judges. That is unfair. Ed and I willingly and happily stayed out of these people's business. We knew better than to exert any influence on them. The Execom was banned from attending any of the Selection Committee screenings, banned from being in the same room as the Board of Judges as they deliberated. Even if we wanted to, we couldn't. Sure, we're friends with some of them. But camaraderie and professionalism aren't mutually exclusive. Besides, it wasn't up to Ed and me to handpick the members of both groups. All Execom members nominated and vetted candidates. In fact Ed and I do not know all the members of both groups."
"Ayun nga siguro, the Chairman and I bet the Executive Director consider me and Ed unmanageable, to say the least," Moira says. "Hindi rin natin madidiscount ang possiblity ng outside influence on the Chairman."
And by outside influence, she means Marichu Maceda, the 2015 MMFF executive committee member who issued that questionable order to the jury not to score "Honor Thy Father" for Best Picture; and Senator Tito Sotto—a senator who wants a separate festival for independently-produced movies, as if we don't have enough festivals for independently-produced movies, as if he doesn't want those independently-produced films to benefit from a two week slot in cinemas at a time when people have the most cash to burn. But I digress. To illustrate Marichu Maceda's and Tito Sotto's friendship, consider this anecdote from Moira:
"At the Senate hearing which tackled Sen. Sotto's resolution pushing for the creation an indie filmfest separate from MMFF, a diatribe titled 'STATEMENT OF MADAM MARICHU MACEDA: Lamenting the sorry state of the MMFF 2016' was distributed to everyone present. Sen. Sotto read aloud an excerpt from it, as if the font size (20) wasn’t big enough for everyone to read. The part he chose had Ms. Maceda bewailing 'the 'mean' words being hurled at (theater owners) by some members of the ExeCom. The problem is these (sic) new crop of festival officials wrongfully feel that what they are doing right now are what will save the Philippine movie industry from obscurity.' Here Sen. Sotto raises his voice and slows down the pace, for emphasis as he goes in for the finish. 'But the truth of the matter is that this seems to be the nail that seals the death of the movie industry in the Philippines as we know it.' Good thing they brought her back to the Execom in the nick of time then! Sorry. I couldn’t resist." (I LIVE FOR SARCASM.)
The reforms put in place by ex MMDA (and therefore MMFF) chairman Emerson Carlos were respected by incumbent MMDA Chairman Tim Orbos, but only up to a certain point."
Moira dares say it out loud: #MMFF2016 was sabotaged.
"I am not saying he [Tim Orbos] engineered the sabotage (I doubt it) or that he even participated in it (I do not have first-hand knowledge of such). But this much I give him 'credit' for: he stood back and allowed it to happen. The MMFF 2016 entries were massacred the moment certain cinemas declared that their support of the festival ends in Metro Manila and should not extend to the rest of the country, to which, they said, the MMFF had no claim. They had every right, they and their apologists said, to show other local films, namely three of the submissions rejected by the Selection Committee, i.e., Super Parental Guardians, Enteng Kabisote 10, and Mano Po 7. The massacre continued to the slashing of the fest duration by four days, effectively shutting down the fest on January 3 and not January 7 as it had been the case for over twenty years. The last one cannot be blamed on the cinemas or the bookers or the bookers' and cinemas' joint association. At an emergency Execom meeting with cinema representatives present, no one from the cinemas brought up the duration or when the last official day of MMFF 2016 would be. It was, shockingly, brought up by someone from OUR side, the festival organization side. I almost fell off my seat when I heard this person say, all of a sudden, 'Actually, according to the law, the festival run is only ten days. So it's only up to January 3, not January 7.' After that the cinemas and the bookers changed their calendars, which, for the longest time, had January 8 encircled as the first day of any year that Hollywood could return to our screens. The new red-letter day was January 4. But maybe this was a one-off, just like the 'only-in-Metro-Manila' blow. It was the Establishment's revenge on those who dared to take MMFF out of their hands, who dared think it could be fixed and then tried, in their eyes a necessary corrective measure and a punishment that would be lifted upon the Establishment's inevitable restoration.
Chairman Orbos, Executive Director Ona, and at least a majority of us at the MMFF 2016 Execom could have done more, much more, to stop the carnage. We could have, as one body, stopped the coup that certain stakeholders set in motion. We could have and should have said NO to the boycott outside Metro Manila. We definitely should have said NO to shutting down the fest on January 3 instead of January 7. THAT was the failure. NOT the seeds that have been planted. NOT the best lineup of entries in years, maybe decades. NOT the most engaged audience ever."
Digest all that first. See how people who want real change to happen are booted out by those that want to keep the Filipino audience down, their heels firmly on our backs?
Up next: What can ordinary people do and the #MMFF2016 gains we must protect
"Pro-indie [films]” ba talaga sina Moira Lang at Edward Delos Santos Cabagnot? Ano nga ba ang mga nagawa nina Moira Lang at Ed Cabagnot during their tenure as members of the MMFF 2016 executive committee?
“I’m not pro-indie [films]. I’m anti-labeling,” Moira stresses. “Labeling is lazy and is often a tool that revisionists and fascists find handy.” She and Ed were labeled “pro-indie [films]” so that whoever wanted them out of the picture could “make sense of things”: “Ed and Moira turned MMFF too indie. Indie and MMFF do not go together. Ed and Moira must go.”
The truth is, the very first thing Moira raised when she became part of the #MMFF2016 executive committee—under ex Chairman Emerson Carlos’ watch—was, “TANGGALIN NA NATIN PLEASE YUNG DICHOTOMY NG INDIE-MAINSTREAM.” “It doesn’t really help any of us—on either side, or sa side ng cinema or side ng moviegoers,” she says. “It’s really counterproductive, and frankly, useless.” The most crucial thing, Moira deemed, was that they examine the CRITERIA for selecting the 8 #MMFF2016 entries. Ed Cabagnot suggested that as a body, they should do the most basic thing first: Ask themselves, “ANO BA YUNG MISSION AND VISION NG MMFF?” The #MMFF2016 executive committee members spent a weekend in Tagaytay and didn’t stop brainstorming until they came up with a statement that would serve as their compass every step of the way:
“[The Metro Manila Film Festival is] a festival that celebrates Filipino artistic excellence, promotes audience development, and champions the sustainability of the film industry.”
“[It’s] three-fold, ang ganda,” Moira explains. “It’s pro-produceartist, pro-audience, it’s pro-business.” With their intention put clearly to paper, the next step was examining the criteria for selecting the entries that would make the cut.
In the previous years, “commercial viability” was the most important criterion at a whopping 50%. But what is “commercial viability”? That was a question raised by some members, including Moira. Tsaka kahit i-define natin yan ngayon, tapos biglang ipalabas natin, malalaman natin mali pala lahat tayo. Kasi most of the time, hindi mo mahuhulaan kung ano yung magiging big hit eh,” Moira says. “Kasi kung ganun kadali yun, lahat tayo ginagawa na yung biggest hits of the century. At lahat tayo, mayaman na beyond our wildest dreams.”
So HOW did previous MMFF executive committee members GUESS which movies have “commercial viability”?
Through a very unempirical “process”: By simply looking at the names of the stars.
See, pre-#MMFF2016, filmmakers submitted SCRIPTS instead of FINISHED FILMS—acceptable IF the MMFF were a grant-giving body to filmmakers who have no funds to produce their stories, like, say, CinemaOne or Cinemalaya. But it’s NOT. The MMFF is the country’s biggest and most important film festival—ideally, those who want to join must submit films. “Ang ginagawa dati, ‘Sino yung bida mo? Sino yung mga artista mo? Bina-base nila yung tinatawag nilang ‘commercial viability’ sa ‘sino yung artista mo?’” Moira says. “Kasi nga fake yung process na yun. Dummy lang yung scripts. Ang ano diyan is: Sino yung malalakas, meron silang assured slots. Meron talagang laging slot diyan ang Star Cinema, meron ang MZET, ganun. Tapos yung iba ibibigay sa isang historical film, token historical film, token ganitong film.”
Fact is, household names don’t always guarantee box-office success. And we have a number of movie gems fronted by non-mainstream stars that defied the odds: “Who would have thought that HENERAL LUNA would make that much and would make John Arcilla a star? Look at ‘That Thing Called Tadhana.’ Sasabihin mo ba na automatic blockbuster because it’s [fronted by] Angelica [Panganiban] and JM [de Guzman]? Hindi naman eh. That’s not the main reason why that film became a hit. Yung ‘Zombadings,’ yung ‘Ang Babae Sa Septic Tank,’ yung ‘Kimmy Dora’ that launched Eugene Domingo as a star? How do you account for those hits,” Moira asks. “Those were word-of-mouth hits and you need at least two weeks para mag gain siya ng traction, hindi mo siya pwedeng tanggalin agad sa sinehan.”
The status quo was disrupted last year when #MMFF2016 executive committee members in favor of finished film over script won by a slim margin. “Pag binase mo sa finished film, mako-compare mo apples to apples. Mas fresh yung apple nitong mga non-studio film, so baka tumagilid sila [Big studios], di ba? So alam nila, nafo-foresee nila nab aka dehado sila pagka kinompare yung one finished film versus another finished film,” Moira says.
THE MUCH-NEEDED CHANGE FROM SCRIPTS TO FINISHED FILMS WAS THE BIGGEST VICTORY OF THE #MMFF2016, Moira reiterates.
GUIDED BY THEIR MISSION STATEMENT, THE #MMFF2016 EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE CAME UP WITH A NEW SET OF CRITERIA:
• Story and audience appeal – 40 % (“Ano muna yung good movie? Ano yung nag e-enrich sa audience? Ano yung may reaction yung audience? • Technical excellence – 40% • Global appeal – 10% • Filipino sensibility – 10%
Moira knows this new set of criteria is “not perfect,” but it’s a set of criteria that “does not disregard the audience, encourages artistry and good crafting and good storytelling.” All #MMFF2016 executive committee members agreed: “Hindi dapat nagka-clash ang good storytelling, good cinematic quality and attributes at audience appeal. Hindi yun nagka clash. In fact, natutulungan lahat yun. So yun ang gawin natin.”
With the mission statement put to paper, the new finished film rule in place, and a set of criteria that doesn’t put a premium on “commercial viability,” whatever that is, the next crucial step was DETERMINING THE SELECTION COMMITTEE COMPOSITION.
Because of the #MMFF2015 scandal (you know, where Marichu Maceda and Dominic Du interfered with the jury and told them not to score “Honor Thy Father” for Best Picture), a very important change was made last year: “Hindi sasali ang any MMFF executive committee members sa selection.” THE #MMFF2016 SELECTION COMMITTEE WAS COMPLETELY SEPARATE AND INDEPENDENT OF THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE. Translation: The 14 MMFF executive committee members were “banned from attending the selection committee’s hearings, meetings, etc.” The #MMFF2016 selection committee included: Nicanor Tiongson, Allan Allanigue, Lawrence Fajardo, Krip Yuson, Joy Belmonte, Mae Juana Change Paner, Crispina Belen and Ping Medina.
“We reminded them: Ito yung bagong mission statement, keep in mind, tsaka ito yung bagong criteria,” was all Moira fed the selection committee.
27 movies were screened by the selection committee, and 8 made the cut. Once the Magic 8 was announced, Moira insisted all of the executive committee members WATCH ALL 8 FILMS. [So that] we know what we’re talking about].” They executive committee watched all eight films in two days.
From the start of their tenure to the very end, Moira Lang and Ed Cabagnot wanted to restore INTEGRITY in the country’s biggest film festival. “For me, those are the biggest wins of #MMFF2016: the new vision-mission statement and criteria, the finished film versus script victory, and the selection committee composition.”
See what radical changes they have done in a short span of time? The question is: GIVEN ALL THE GOOD THINGS THAT HAPPENED UNDER THEIR WATCH, WHY WERE THEY SACKED WITHOUT ANY WORD? WE DESERVE AN EXPLANATION.
Up next: Was #MMFF2016 really a flop? What can ordinary Filipinos like you and me do?
So #FLOPPEDT ba talaga ang #MFF2016? What can we, us powerless common indios, do to make sure the movies shown at the #MMFF2017 are not pera-pera lang projects that benefit only one or two stakeholders, i.e. producers and theaters?
Without batting an eye, Moira Lang, ex MMFF executive committee member, says, “MMFF 2016 was NOT a flop.” Yes, #MMFF2015 grossed over 1 billion pesos. Sounds impressive? Wait til you see the breakdown.
A. “In 2015 close to 70% of the total box office take went only to the two top-grossing films. In 2016 the top 2's shared take accounted for 55% of the total gross. The lowest grossing title in 2015 accounted for 0.5% of the pie. In 2016 the lowest grosser took 1.4%, still low but a big improvement from the previous year.”
B. “MMFF 2015 grossed over 1B. From that the beneficiaries got 14M. MMFF 2016 grossed 400M. From that the beneficiaries are getting 12M.”
Oh di ba? Because of the systemic corruption, from a staggering P1B earned in MMFF 2015, only P14M went to the beneficiaries, like the Film Academy of the Philippines, Mowelfund, etc. Instead of remitting what is due these institutions, the waived amusement taxes were used for the MMFF’s operating expenses—and this is just one of the many anomalies uncovered during the congressional inquiry in early 2016! Compare that to MMFF 2016 na kahit HALF lang ng MMFF 2015 ang gross earnings eh P12,000,000 ang ibinigay sa beneficiaries.
Consider also that #MMFF2016 was up against all kinds of odds, like the fact that theater owners decided not to show all the entries nationwide (WTF), and that the festival was cut short by four days! Moira says, “It was a hit that could've and would've grossed a lot more if all cinemas nationwide showed the MMFF entries like they did before. It would have grossed even much more if the festival duration was not cut by 4 days and was allowed to run a full 14 days as with previous years.”
The success of the movies in the #MMFF2016 reveal something about the Filipino audience: We’re not as dumb as SOME producers/theater owners think we are. “Look at the two topgrossers: Jun Robles Lana's 'Die Beautiful' and Erik Matti's 'Seklusyon.' Neither had big stars. The first is a sexually frank, non-linear account of the life of a trans woman that ends tragically. The second is a psychological philosophical thriller told as a horror story that skewers religion and chucks the restorative good-wins-over-evil ending,” Moira points out. “As far from romcom and slapstick as can be, they defy any local studio's formula for a sure hit. Both were rated R13 by the MTRCB. Each grossed over a hundred million.”
It’s sad that Moira and Ed have been eased out unceremoniously and unfairly despite their palpable passion to elevate filmmakers and the Filipino audience without forgetting the bottomline. Even more alarming, Marichu Maceda and Dominic Du, those #MMFF2015 executive committee members who meddled with the jury and told them not to score Erik Matti’s “Honor Thy Father,” ARE BACK. “My fear is that they will reinstate the mainstream-indie kaululan. And divide the lineup into 4 from the indies and 4 from mainstream. Kasi, 'yan talaga ang plano ng ilan sa kanila, something they weren’t ashamed to admit late last year, in the lead-up to the festival,” Moira says. That 4-4 proposal not only divides the industry into mainstream and indie unnecessarily—it also disregards quality. Imagine this scenario: What if, out of all the entries submitted this year, ALL 8 really good movies that make the cut are independently produced? Will the new selection committee chuck them in favor of 4 studio-produced ones that aren’t as good?
Moira has fears. And biggest of them all is “that nobody will give a damn. Sana hindi. Sana maraming magbantay, maraming mag-ingay. I wish enough people will finally say, ‘Enough. We won't put up with any more b.s. We deserve better. This festival is more ours than it is yours.’ I wish more people will stop buying the b.s. that good movies and popular movies are mutually exclusive. Good movies can be popular, can and do become big hits. Popular movies don't have to insult our intelligence and our humanity.”
So what can we, yes, you and me, us powerless indios, do? “Keep informed. Post, tweet, be heard. Don't settle for what MMFF 2016 was able to accomplish. You deserve so much more. Demand for it. Find good movies and storytellers to champion. Start a movie club in your school, workplace, street, city. Organize screenings...” She trails off.
Noted, Moira. I start with this: Using this page to hopefully create noise. Awareness.
Thank you for your service to the Filipino people, Moira Lang and Edward Delos Santos Cabagnot. History will judge you kindly.
TL;DR MMFF is plagued by hullabaloos and the 2015 Honor thy Father disqualification scandal showed the corruption. 2016 came and the new MMDA chair tried to set things straight by listening to people who actually care to make things better. The result was the MMFF 2016 lineup. And then now we have this lineup in MMFF 2017 because those same people who cared were sacked.

2017.06.11 03:27 SyrusDrake Give her a chance to react but don't back down from challenges?

Yea, the title sounds convoluted, so let me explain. Yesterday, I read this article by Nick Notas.* Basically, it's about not just acting like a platonic friend around women. Point 2 says you shouldn't always wait for clear invitations and permissions to make a move. If she's not comfortable with what you're doing, she'll tell you. Fair enough. But further down, under point 5, he says you shouldn't back down from the slightest challenge. If you're on a date and she says "I’m not doing anything on the first date so don’t get any ideas.", she's just testing you, she's not telling you she doesn't want to get sexual.
I find this extremely contradictory and confusing...so I should give her the opportunity to say if she's uncomfortable with something but then ignore her? I shouldn't have to explain why this makes me feel uneasy...
*Some people will probably tell me not to read his content. It's like picking a programming language. No matter which one you pick, SOMEONE is going to tell you you picked the wrong one. I like him. Deal with it.

2016.09.27 12:59 SyrusDrake How to make clear it's a date?

This is more a general question and not relating to any specific event. Things have changed for me recently and I've decided I wanted to move on from blindly accepting that I'm alone forever to be more proactive. A lot of things have helped me with that decision, among other stuff the blog of Nick Notas. He suggests just approaching a girl and saying something like "Hey, I saw you and thought you looked interesting. Wanna meet up for coffee sometime?" And even though I am an introvert and have almost crippling social anxiety, that's something I could see myself doing at university. The problem with this, I feel, is that the girl might not realize that I am interested in her as a potential date or partner. After all, I'm a fellow student, maybe I'm just interested in getting to know my classmates better? Similar issue with friends from the past. I recently heard that a former neighbor and friend of mine studies at my university too. In the past, I've had a bit of a crush on her. If I ever saw her, approaching her might not be hard and neither would asking her to hang out because catching up with people you haven't seen in a while is not weird... But how would you ask her on a date?
Something I might have to add: English is not my everyday language. So the word "date"...well, it's used but you can't really ask someone "would you like to go on a date with me?"

2015.10.21 21:49 RaulMarti PERONISMO :ESE DESCONOCIDO ANIMAL DE MUCHAS CABEZAS DIFERENTES Y HASTA OPUESTAS

¿Curioso, no?.

http://i.imgur.com/yiSYpOC.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/T7O0hdM.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/oCxxq1r.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/RXXk1MK.jpg
