2020.12.04 13:27 mirrordescent [BitD] [Online] [LGBT+ Friendly] New GM looking for new players!

Hey there! I'm looking for around 4 players, preferably new to Blades in the Dark, to run a campaign with - I'm new to this system too, but I have experience with playing Monster of the Week.
You'd have to be patient with me as I have never GMed before nor have I actually had experience directly with BitD (and I'm a bit anxious!) , so I want to find new players who can learn the system with me, though I'm not adverse to having a more experienced player if you're okay with having a clueless DM!
Preferably I'd organise a session zero (which would be text based) after I have enough people show interest, to run through character creation and sort out crew creation and that. The entire campaign will be run through Discord voice chat though! Date is not set in stone either, I am UK based (GMT timezone) and I plan to do this weekly, probably on Friday or Saturday evenings, but this will depend on what works for the players! Preferably people over 18, (I'm 19 myself) though I'm not against having younger people join as I want to keep it SFW
Please DM me through here or reply to this thread if you're interested!

2020.12.04 12:15 PetarTankosic-Gajic R1 of EE's "Are the 'Extreme' Economic Systems Totally Pointless?" Part 1

The market has spoken: you demanded, and I am supplying. This is fact part 1 of my analysis of Economics' Explained video: It's an older video, but it took quite some time to do the research for this video. And because I think it's worth looking at these claims in details, I am breaking this up in smaller parts.
I've separated this into 2 videos for my Economics YouTube channel, part 1 and part 2.
Just a note before I start, the reason I only look at the historical aspects of his video is because this is what he is focusing on when discussing communism v capitalism. It's just that I don't quote these parts, and instead dive into the data we have on the Industrial Revolution.
In describing communism he says: economy where goods and services are distributed by needs rather than by means. An economy where people could not rest on their laurels of being land or capital owners to get by without ever needing to contribute any personal effort.
Yeah but what does it mean to ‘rest on your laurels?’ by being a capital or land owner? I mean, it certainly sounds bad that the majority of us have to go to work whilst others get to sit back and receive ‘passive income’. According to EE, this requires no personal effort. We will break down the analysis of his claims into looking at returns to capital and land from a historical perspective, since EE is discussing history. It is also useful to look at the historical returns during the backdrop of the Industrial Revolution, as this was a time of great change, and people, both rich and poor, had to adapt to the new conditions.
The question then comes down to: could you simply stay rich or get richer by simply being born into a wealthy family? Could you in fact have an easy life where most people did the work while you got to sit back and enjoy the riches? As we’ll see, the answer is more complex than you might think.
Capital owners
A capital owner is someone who owns shares. So if you’re investing in the stock market, regardless of how much, you’re technically an owner of capital. Of course this doesn’t necessarily confer voting rights over the company, or any other privileges, as compared to someone with a much larger share, but this doesn’t invalidate the fact you have a financial stake in the company. Will you always make money if you’re invested in the stock market? And has this been true historically? Well, sure, as long as you’re investing for the long term. Would investing in the stock market in the 19th century had made you even as remotely as rich as the elite? Absolutely not.
There are 3 charts there that I don't want to link here for space reasons. As we can see, stock market returns have been going up since 1829, but there are many small dips, and these could easily be enough to wipe out new investors. However, these are all short term, and you must continue having your money in the stock market to participate in the gains. You can’t panic sell, as much as you might want to in the short-term. Think about people that sold shares during the bear market this year, and if they haven’t re-entered the market since, they’ve missed out of the upside as markets around the world climb higher.
At around 1750, the traditional starting date of the Industrial Revolution, from Mokyr (2009) we understand there exists a middle class. About 1/7 people are estimated to have been in the middle class around this time, and although small, this proportion grew over the course of the industrial revolution. The middle class did invest in the stock market and participated in the market economy, earning returns and would certainly be capital owners. Would they become as rich as the traditional elite using this method? Absolutely not.
And so the simple story of ‘resting on your laurels’ by being a capital owner applies to a lot of us! And it applied to a growing number of people from the 1700s too. You might say the rich people can afford to invest more money into the stock market and then live off the interest that gives them, and yet their wealth and income is still subject to the whims of the movements of the market. If you want the best returns from the stock market, you have to take risks, it’s not something you can just set and forget. The only way to do the latter is to invest in a broad index and invest just for the long-term.
What about landowners?
During the 18th and 19th centuries, the landed elite did indeed hold a vast amount of their fortunes in land. (Nicholas(1), Pp. 39) says, “The largest landowners were the hereditary aristocrats.” This adds fuel to the claims made by EE so far. This only started to come undone during the end of the 19th century, with both popular pressure and law reforms. There are many details here that aren’t worth going into for this R1, but the popular perception at the time was that the landed elite were able to hold onto vast holdings of land, and pass this down generations in the same family. People also noted that the rich tended to increase their landholding over time, gobbling up smaller land holders. These perceptions are certainly borne out by the evidence (Nicholas (1) 1999).
From Nicholas(2) we understand that for the period, the vast majority of businessmen held only about ⅙ of their wealth in land. Despite how rich these people became, this new wealth was not enough on its own to enter the high society of the established elite. There were certainly no financial barriers preventing them purchasing large blocks of land, but the power of the elite was enough to stop these nouveau riche from entering the property game. This would certainly add fuel to the claim that the largest landowners were protecting their economic rents and being born into such a family increased the likelihood of inheriting that wealth. Certainly these families jealously guarded their landholding as their wealth allowed many of these people to relax and live easier lives than the rest of the working class, or indeed the new industrialists.
And yet we get the following quote from (Nicholas(2), Pp. 22): “Businessmen had few economic incentives to purchase land. Land was relatively unremunerative, unless mortgaged against credit, and the opportunity cost was government securities which were higher yielding and did not entail a cost of maintenance.” The land game was almost exclusively for the aristocrats.
And so changing times brought about changing circumstances, and land no longer provided the returns it once did. “Landowning wealth was eroded and undermined by a fall in rents, prices, and confidence” (Nicholas(1), Pp. 42). The falling rents occurred partially because of increased foreign competition. The elite responded by increasingly turning to business, either directly, or as rentiers in order to safeguard their incomes. (Nicholas (1) 1999).
Let us look at a graph mapping the returns to Consoles vs years’ purchase of land from 1795 to 1930.
So admittedly I don’t know exactly how to read the graph, but from the source, the higher the years’ purchase, the worse the returns are. We see that consoles still had better returns than land until the 1880s. This would imply that land was a smaller risk than consoles, but the higher price might reflect the fact that people were willing to bid up prices given that large landholding was the realm of the landed gentry.
How do we answer what EE said in the video?
Large landowners did exist and they did expand their landholding, and certainly did not have to work as hard as the majority of the population. Being born into such a family was winning a lottery and there was a good chance you would inherit the wealth. And yet that’s not the entire story. As we’ve seen, the returns to land were actually lower than that of consoles, suggesting there were reasons other than wealth to hold onto land. These included things such as prestige and social standing.
And yet, even as the aristocrats expanded their landholding, the returns to land were going down and it actually wasn’t economical for the new industrialists to buy land, even if they weren’t blocked by the aristocrats from entering the market. In fact, toward the end of the 19th century, many large landowners began diversifying their assets and started investing in industry and other sectors of the economy. Many aristocrats did indeed have it easy, but as the Industrial Revolution ran its course, a growing proportion had to work and fight for their wealth. There were popular movements, there were law changes, which changed the game on the rich and they had to adapt or lose it all. Very few got to ‘rest on their laurels’ as claimed, and this applied to capital owners too.
A middle class did exist from the 1700s, and these people did indeed invest in the stock market and other areas of the economy. There was no simple monoliths of ‘rich’ who did nothing, and ‘poor’ who did all the work.
The world in the 1800s was getting wealthier, steam power, railroads, telegrams all enabled business to be done and wealth to be created on a scale that would have been unimaginable some 100 years earlier. But all the while, living conditions had not improved for average workers, and in pollution filled cities lined with soul-crushing factories, they had probably gone backwards. This was because average workers did not control the mans of production.
It’s a very large stretch to say this is all caused because people didn’t own the means of production. It should be noted that as machinery became more commonplace, the dangerous working conditions were well recognised and that women and children were soon barred from the factory work. Whilst we cannot read the minds of the people making the laws at the time, they certainly do seem to have been paternalistically minded when campaigning for and then constructing those laws. There is also good evidence people got additional pay to compensate them for the dangerous conditions. And so it seems many people were making rational decisions based on the incentives on offer.
Let’s look at worker cooperatives in some detail
To join a cooperative, eligible workers must purchase an initial share. The price can be very low in some industries that don’t need large capital investments. It is in the interests of the cooperative to keep the share prices low to encourage a broader membership. However shares can be far more expensive, for example in Isthmus Engineering, a worker cooperative in Madison, Wisconsin, a share costs $10,000 (Artz & YounJun 2011). Workers share in the profits based on how much labor they put into the firm, rather than investment. This can be determined by the number of hours worked, by earnings or a combination of the two. In addition, people who have been there longer may get a larger share of the profits.
Performance of modern worker cooperatives
Perotin (2012) finds output was either the same or higher in cooperatives as compared to conventional firms in the same industry. This held across all industries they looked at. “Worker cooperatives are never found to be less productive than conventional firms and may be more productive“ (Perotin Pp. 19)”. That seems conclusive enough, but there is some nuance as the story of production can get more complex, “....If conventional firms organized production in the same way as the cooperatives, they might produce more with their current average input levels in these industries” (Perotin Pp. 18).
(Artz & Younjun 2011) Found that cooperatives had lower quit rates relative to similar conventional firms. Worker cooperatives adjust pay rather than firing people during downturns, so that cooperative members bear financial risk rather than employment risk. The success of the cooperative really depends on whether workers have much say in the governance of the firm. (Molk Pp. 941) concludes by saying, “Cooperatives have lower failure rates than comparable investor-owned rivals, after controlling for a variety of factors such as firm size, age, and industry.”
The drawbacks of cooperatives
Cooperatives can face chronic underinvestment into the firm, which may favour short-term projects; there might be a tendency to not want to grow the firm since that dilutes the person’s shares in the firm. There can be a temptation to sell out to owners in order to cash out investment into the firm, which can’t be realised any other way. (Perotin Pp. 22) concludes that, “A common pattern among such companies is that after a few years, especially if the firm is successful, worker members sell the company to a conventional owner.” If you’re planning on leaving the cooperative sometime soon, you will not want funds diverted from your share in the business to go into either long-term projects or machinery maintenance. You will not see the benefits these projects will bring.
So why aren’t there more cooperatives?
Given the benefits clearly outweigh the drawbacks, we should expect to see more worker cooperatives. But why aren’t they more of a thing? And from EEs quote, why weren’t they more of a thing during the Industrial Revolution?
From Molk (2014), we understand they are difficult to form because entrepreneurs don’t get much personally out of starting a cooperative; there can be difficulty in managing worker cohesion, especially if the workers are heterogeneous and because of inefficient distribution among members. There can be difficulty attracting entrepreneurial talent and insufficient rewards for high ability workers. Cooperatives often face higher costs, because the firm predominantly only gets investment from its members.
It is found that workers essentially sort themselves by ability when joining cooperatives and so joining or starting a cooperative is not always a straight-forward and simple process. It certainly can be a more difficult process than going to an interview and getting hired, even as annoying as that process can be. Most cooperatives tend to be small, as concentration at the top can’t happen if each person has an equal say in what happens to the business. But this small size means the cooperatives won’t necessarily hire more people as quickly as a corresponding traditional business. The same managers tend to have less oversight, which can harm the efficiency of the business. Managers will want higher wages than those earned by the members, and those members may not accept the wage difference. The most successful worker cooperatives, such as Mondragon, have restricted worker control by delegating authority to elected boards. And as a historical example of this, crew members and boat owners in the 19th century whaling industry held shares in the profits from a successful voyage, but the captain made the decisions at sea, not the shareholders (Kremer 1997).
The entrepreneur
What kind of person or people start a cooperative? Most cooperatives form from the initiatives of a single entrepreneur, and that person requires a different attitude to a normal entrepreneur looking to start a business. As these people are rarer, cooperatives are similarly rarer. Also, converting a firm into a cooperative is costly, even if at the individual level there might be benefits to do so. There’s a coordination problem. From (Molk Pp. 933) we learn that entrepreneurs desire wealth and autonomy as their primary reason for starting a business, “With society-oriented measures of pursuing a personal vision, status, respect, or concern for the community of distant secondary importance” (Molk, Pp. 933).
Entrepreneurs are not incentivised to start businesses as a cooperative, because they cannot take an outsize profit share from the business if it’s successful. And yet, because the failure rate for new businesses is so high, it must be possible to get such profits to act as an incentive in the first place.
“In this way, starting a cooperative is analogous to supplying a public good: the entrepreneur must share the profits from ownership among other member-owners." (Molk, Pp. 931) And so from the evidence, we get that even when cooperatives would be the efficient form for a particular business, they won’t form due to the difficulties involved.
How does this stack up to what EE said?
Going from the evidence I have seen, I fail to see how worker cooperatives could have saved the first generations of industrial workers. There were in fact some worker cooperatives alive during the later half of the 19th century, but they don't seem to have been a large factor in the economy. I also don't see how the economy would have grown as it did if worker cooperatives were the norm rather than the outlier. And that is if they could have been started in sufficient numbers anyway, since as we've already seen, they're quite hard to form these days let alone in the 19th century. I imagine people would have been more hostile toward worker cooperatives back then on top of all of this, but this attitude wasn't realistically going to suddenly change on a large scale during the Industrial Revolution.
Certainly factory conditions for the early workers were terrible, and remained so for many decades. But they did eventually improve with popular movements and law changes. Would such changes have happened if worker cooperatives had been the norm? Hard to answer that counterfactual, but given everything said so far, if we had re-rolled the dice on the Industrial Revolution, it is hard to ever see a scenario where they become the norm.
All this is to say that the simplistic version of history EE is presenting (so far!) can safely be discarded, but it is worth pointing out that his points often lean into popular (but incorrect or incomplete) conceptions people have of history. Such claims, much as EE's claims, 'sound correct'. And so I hope that in my own small way I can start correcting the record.

2020.12.04 02:47 burnshow wow

This is....crazy.
Saturday you were suicidal. I spent the next 48 hours obsessively checking my phone to see if you'd responded, wondering if I should call law enforcement to do a welfare check. I've been there, in that suicidal headspace, several times. I would never wish it on anyone. I was upset, when you seemed to 'just forget' to respond to me, as though I wasn't important enough to you to let me know you were ok. You have still not explained why you did that.
Now, just 5 days later, you are lashing out at me/doubling down/giving me the silent treatment for catching you in a lie and calling you out on it. What else am I supposed to do? Am I supposed to just let you keep deceiving me and twisting my words to suit whatever your own purposes are, regardless of who it hurts or what damage it does? Do you like it when your own words are twisted? Do you like it when you're ignored as punishment?
How can you be in a decent long term relationship without allowing your partner to check you/call you out when you need it? How is anyone able to give you any sort of critical feedback in your life, if it's not your idea first? I guess people just don't do that with you because they're scared you'll act like this in response? How are you going to get better through therapy if you can't handle hearing anyone say anything but nice things about you?
I don't know what's happened to you. I don't recall you being like this when we dated in high school. I realize we've had 15 years to become different humans, but I guess I always dreamed we'd just both become better versions of what we were, and still be able to eventually be together like we were supposed to. I didn't account for.....this. I didn't account for you to loathe me so much that you would treat me this way.
I've done everything I can to be the best version of myself for you, to try to help make this (what I thought we both wanted) finally work. Nobody deserves to be outright ignored, repeatedly, for 2 months solid, when they ask for simple needs, like a direct conversation. Nobody deserves to have to play guessing games instead, when they state repeatedly they don't like them and would rather just have a regular dialogue.
I know you are not this way at your core. At your core is where I love you, the you that is whole, open, and sweet; willing to take risks, in life and in love, with the one who loves you the most and always will. I do believe that that part of you exists, and is here presently. I believe this because I can still feel my heart ache the same way it did for you 15 years ago. Perhaps it's fueled by your (supposed, because you've never actually spoken to me to directly confirm) letters, which helped so much to keep motivating me to work at keeping you in my life now. I hope, very much, that your words in those letters were true. But I realize it's possible they're not. Fuck. Fuck, that is a horrible thing to consider if they weren't your truth. Fuck.
For myself, I hate unsent letters. I truly believe if you have something important to say to someone, you should just say it to them. If someone ends up upset, have a dialogue about it afterward to help clarify, apologize, whatever. You can rest assured that every word I've written here has been for you. I have meant for you to have, read, consume every single one. Did what I write I make you sad, happy, angry? Ask me about it. I want to talk about it. Even my comments; they've been intended to show you something I thought you should know about me, that I'd so badly wanted to tell you privately, but gave up on hoping for that dialogue. I introduced the unsent letters sub as a last ditch effort to try to help you to take baby steps toward feeling comfortable enough to converse with me directly. It didn't work. Now it's just another tool for you to twist and manipulate reality into something that crushes me and serves you. I didn't realize how perfect a platform it was for that.
I would still like for you to send me a direct message, to this username, if the person behind the screen is the you from my immutable-love-heart, and not this other stranger. I had lots of things to say and to ask my sweet immutable-love-you, about your life now, and about goals and ideas and timelines for a future together. I wanted to share with you what some research says about couples who reunite later in life. I wanted a lot of things. We can discuss what I've written, or what you've written. We can talk about whatever you'd like.
If I don't hear from you, I will take that for what it is: your refusal to respect and fulfill a basic need of mine, your wish to not reunite, and your disregard for my heartbreak. But at least perhaps the hurting in my heart for you will eventually dampen somewhat. I won't continue to contact you; I don't wish to harass those who are loathe to interact with me.
Please come back to me someday, when you can open yourself and your heart fully to me again. Please be safe, listen to your heart, make the right choices, and fully love those in your life who love you. I love you, and I always will.

2020.12.03 20:07 brokencasbutt67 Identity Fraud/Theft and Loans?

I received a letter in the post this morning to say that someone has applied for a loan in my name. They were successful in their application, and that the loan was conditionally approved.
I've rang the company and told them - they're going to run a full investigation, but I just don't know what to do or where to turn. The UK police won't report it and say to use Action Fraud UK, Action Fraud UK say it's not something that they can investigate because "The use of another person’s identity, often referred to as identity theft, is not a police recordable crime." - directly quoted from their email.
I've rang my bank (TSB) and all looks okay on their end, but in searching my credit rating through Clearscore and CreditKarma, ~15 companies have ran a credit check on me on November 30th - which is the same date on the letter I received.
I've got the CIFAS Protective Registration, but I don't know how many other companies could've been contacted. I only found out because of that one company sending a letter after they couldn't get in touch with the number that had been given.
I'm not in a position to be paying off any loans, and idk, I'm kinda scared?
Thanks in advance <3
Edit to clarify: I live in Yorkshire

1. Incumbent banks:
The big banking brands have shown little interest in cryptocurrency to date. In part, this is due to their general aversion to high levels of risk and an institutionalized culture ill-suited to digital change and innovation – but there is also a legitimate fear that they will fall foul of financial regulators.
There are, for example, concerns around money laundering – with criminal networks known to move sums around via cryptocurrencies. There is also the issue of how an incumbent bank would protect its existing customers from the extreme volatility currently associated with cryptocurrency values.
Alongside the regulatory minefield, there are issues related to tech infrastructure. Right now, most of the high street banks simply don’t have the necessary systems to compete effectively with crypto-first companies (more below). Barclays is one of the few big brands to have explored this area via a partnership with San Francisco-based Coinbase, which made it possible for users to buy cryptocurrencies with sterling and withdraw their funds. But this relationship was quietly dropped in August 2019.
The challenges explain why it tends to be investment banks rather than retail banks that are most adventurous. JP Morgan was the first established banking brand to launch a cryptocurrency – the JPM Coin.
A key point to note is that the JPM Coin’s value is linked directly to the US$, a model referred to as ‘stable coin’.
This is distinct from better-known cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, which has a value based on supply and demand and therefore is more susceptible to volatility. Unlike existing stable coins, where the cash reserves backing them up are often in question, JPM Coin would be directly linked to money in JP Morgan accounts, and the Coin would mainly serve as a means to transfer amounts between accounts using blockchain.
Initiatives such as JPM Coin are likely to play a key role in helping to legitimize the idea of cryptocurrencies, as its link to a fiat currency means it is both less volatile than bitcoin and inspires greater confidence than an abstract currency because it is pegged to the checks and balances of a real economy.

2. Neo banks:
Challenger banks have established themselves as the banking industry’s innovators, so are culturally equipped to embrace disruptive technologies. At the same time, the market leaders have built brands that are trusted by large swathes of the population. So in theory they are the perfect bridge between crypto and fiat banking.
The biggest of the neo banks to have sought a competitive edge via crypto is Revolut, which, in 2017, allowed some of its users to complete transactions in currencies such as Bitcoin, Litecoin, and Ether. Others to have explored the crypto arena include Germany’s Bitwala, which is allowing users to purchase, hold, and earn interest on Bitcoin thanks to a partnership with crypto lending platform Celsius Network.
GAFA (Google, Apple, Facebook, Amazon)
A desire to grow their ecosystem by increasing the services they offer to customers is a key reason for the tech giants to get involved in financial services, and cryptocurrencies are now on their agenda. Apple confirmed its interest in 2019 while Amazon has established blockchain patents that position it well for expansion into crypto.
The fact that the GAFAs are cash-rich and have huge user bases would appear to put the tech giants in poll position to win the cryptocurrency prize – but there are obstacles in their way.
Facebook, for example, experienced a lot of regulatory pushback in 2019 around its Libra currency. Key concerns related to Facebook’s poor record on data privacy and the fact that Libra could become an unregulated financial institution, which with Facebook’s reach and power, could rival some country’s monetary capability.

3. Crypto exchanges:
It stands to reason that cryptocurrency exchanges are well-positioned and strongly motivated to exploit the narrowing gap between crypto and fiat – because they have first-move advantage. Having already built huge cash reserves and crypto-familiar customer bases, it would be relatively straightforward technically for them to add on banking services.
Undoubtedly they will be subjected to close regulatory scrutiny because of concerns about their role in fuelling the shadow economy. Assuming they can overcome this hurdle, the payback will be greater legitimacy in the banking marketplace.
Several exchanges, including Celsius, have already introduced basic add-ons such as high-interest rates for investments and tax services. Binance, the world’s largest exchange by volume, also recently unveiled the Binance Card, a debit card that it says will be accepted by more than 46 million merchants in 200 regions and territories.
The bottom line is that the playbook for how to build a digital bank is out there – if crypto exchanges are able to allay regulator concerns.

4. Crypto-first neo banks:
An important subset of this market is second wave challenger banks that have offerings for the crypto ecosystem baked into their business from launch. Examples include Swiss bank SEBA, which acts as a progressive tech bridge between the traditional and crypto worlds.
Also active is UK-based digital payment platform Wirex which allows customers to buy, sell, exchange, and make payments in cryptocurrency. Additionally, they offer a Wirex Visa card, a multi-currency card giving users the power to seamlessly spend cryptocurrency anywhere Visa is accepted.
What’s interesting about this subset of companies is the way that the best are prioritizing customer experience, adopting the best practices of challenger retail banks. Early indications are that neo banks that concentrate on narrow customer segments or underbanked markets will put themselves in a powerful position.
This is in contrast to the situation with first wave challenger retail banks which have instead worked hard to establish a position in the mass market.
Interestingly, some of the expertise in this sector comes from the first wave of challengers.
Mark Hipperson, who was head of technology at Barclays and co-founder of challenger bank Starling, has just launched a new crypto-enabled platform called Ziglu.
There are no two ways about it - we are at a watershed moment for crypto banking with key players lined up to take a lead in shaping its future direction but, so far, without any clarity over who will make the first paradigm-changing move. What happens next - especially whether the established banking system can flex and adapt to embrace a more distributed, ledger approach to monetary systems - and how the regulators respond, is key.
At stake is a landscape where money and the digital systems around it effectively merge, resulting in much faster, more inclusive, and more dynamic global monetary and banking systems.

2020.12.03 15:27 Exemplar1968 Increase in estate management fees

Hi All,
UK here East Midlands.
We live in a freehold property where the 'green' parts of the estate are managed by a company (First Port). In addition we have a garage in a block, again we pay towards insurance of that as there are properties above as well as a communal car park. My query is the below from them (received today in a letter). Are they allowed to retro speculatively allowed to charge us for these items when it is them that have made the mistake?:
Property Manager’s Comments
This year we have been faced with changes that have had a direct impact on the grounds maintenance
costs and reserve contributions.
I have summarised these changes and the reasons for them below:
Site Team Labour Costs
Government guidance from HMRC has affected the way in which the on-site team wages are charged to
your development. Essentially these costs now have to include VAT, where previously they were exempt.
Prior to November 2018, VAT did not have to be charged for site staff and as a result of this, the labour
cost for the site team before this date was 20% less than the amount included in the attached budget.
Due to an oversight, the 20% increase for VAT was not factored into the budget for the previous service
charge year (1st June 2019 to 31st May 2020) and consequently this has resulted in a greater than 3%
increase on the Grounds Maintenance costs in the attached budget, when compared with the previous
year. As the site team work predominantly within Schedule 1 and Schedule 2, the increase in staff costs have
mostly been reflected in an increase to grounds maintenance within those schedules.
The Grounds Maintenance increase within schedule 2, has however, been mitigated by savings in other
cost areas, resulting in a relatively small overall increase year on year.

Other Cost Increases
There have been some other notable year on year increases to this year’s budget within the insurance and electricity costs. These increases are due to the same costs being set too low in last years budget. The attached budget has been uplifted to reflect what was actually charged to Fernwood in the last set of audited accounts, and in most cases, this is similar to the costs seen in previous years budgets.
Overall, the service charge this year has increased by 7%, largely due to the 20% increase on site staff
costs for VAT and the reserve collection.

2020.12.03 08:41 Onlydinosaurs-Pro Motivation For Students: 20 Steps To Motivate Your Child To Learn

Motivation For Students: 20 Steps To Motivate Your Child To Learn
Motivate your child to learn well by using strategic ways of motivation for students that have been used by teachers and tutors alike.
This article also includes helpful resources and tactics, such as:
  • Suggested activities.
  • Identifying and cultivating the kind of motivation your child needs
  • Teaching resources you can find online, such as sheets, charts, videos, modules, etc.
  • Words of motivation for students that you can say to your child.
So, if you want to help your kid acquire the best motivation for learning despite boredom in online classes or school restrictions, make sure to read on and bookmark this post.
Let’s get started!

What is Student Motivation?

Motivation for students impacts their desire to engage in the learning process—it also involves the goals or reasons that cause your child’s participation or non-participation in learning activities. Your children may be equally motivated to work on a task, but the origin of their motivation may vary.
Let me explain further; universally, there are two types of student motivation for learning:

Intrinsic Motivation
Intrinsic motivation for children happens when your kids find the lessons enjoyable, and they love the sense of accomplishment when the tasks are done. Basically, they are intrinsically motivated for the activity’s sake and the learning it permits.

Extrinsic Motivation
Students motivation for learning happens extrinsically when your children perform a task IN ORDER TO acquire a reward, praise, or simply avoid negative consequences. These external motivators usually come in as fancy stickers, grades, candy or ice cream rewards, parents’ opinions, and teachers’ approval.
Now that we have reviewed these two types of motivation for learning, let’s talk about the different ways you can motivate your child to learn better, whether at school, home, or anywhere.

1. Make reading a habit.

Reading is such a vital key to learning. In fact, studies show that reading to young children has a direct causal effect on their academic life regardless of their home environment or family background. So, developing an atmosphere of reading in the classroom, especially at home, is essential.
If you want your children to develop a love for learning, instill in them the love for reading first. And, remember that more often than not, a child who struggles with reading also struggles with learning.
Suggested activity: read to your children (or with them) at least 20 minutes every day.
Resources: [BLOG POST] 10 books to help children to read and write
Words of motivation for students:
“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn, the more places you’ll go.” Dr. Seuss

2. Find what interests your child.

As a tutor, teacher, or parent who wants to boost the motivation for learning in kids, make sure not to focus entirely on what you are required to teach or what you want to teach. Instead, find what interested your child—what intrinsically motivates them to learn more. Discover what your students need or want.
Are they interested in prehistoric animals? Animatronic dinosaurs will interest them! How about dragons and other animals, whether fictional or real? Animal puppets will surely catch their attention!
Suggested activity: Expose your children to different educational experiences and pay close attention to the activities they choose. Then, to talk to them and ask them what they like most about the activity. Once you figure out their interests, make sure to incorporate such into each learning activity.

3. Cultivate your child’s learning styles.

A children’s motivation for learning is often driven by their learning preferences or styles. While some kids may have a primary learning style, others learn well while using a mix of several different learning styles.
Now, remember that learning styles are unique to each child. So, there isn’t one right or wrong style. However, helping your kid discover his or her preferred learning style will also help you motivate your child to learn more and learn better.
Here are the eight fundamental learning styles:
  • Visual – spatial learners prefer visual presentations.
  • Auditory – aural learners prefer listening to information.
  • Verbal – linguistic learners enjoy wordplay and rhymes and talking about the lesson.
  • Physical – tactile learners learn better when they interact with things physically.
  • Logical – analytical learners often look for trends and patterns in what they learn.
  • Social – these learners gain more insight with social interactions.
  • Solitary – solo learners thrive better when they study alone.
  • Natural – nature learners do best when they interact with Mother Nature.
Suggested activity (for each learning style):
  1. Watch an educational movie with your children, such as a dinosaur movie for kids.
  2. Speak out poems or words in rhymes with your child.
  3. Group discussion or class presentation
  4. Exercise activities, basic sports, dancing, acting, drawing activities
  5. Problem-solving activities
  6. Different team building activities, group games and discussions
  7. Journaling activities, writing essays, individual learning activities
  8. Outdoor trips or classes outdoors, “hands-on” experiments
Resources (for each learning style):
  1. Visual aids, charts, photographs, tables, graphs
  2. Audiobooks, music instruments, poems
  3. Role play scripts, famous speeches
  4. Ball, bicycle, drawing materials
  5. Simple to complex math problems, puzzle pieces
  6. Q and A items, game materials for groups
  7. Reward items for individual accomplishments
  8. Pictures of nature, a documentary about nature or planet earth
Words of motivation for students:
“Don’t let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do.” John Wooden

4. Ensure that the learning objectives are clear to your child.

Students can quickly lose motivation and even get frustrated to behave in class, perform a task, or finish an assignment if your objectives for the lessons are not defined clearly. Learning motivation for children and even older students involves making sure that they know what is expected of them so that they can stay motivated to learn and work.
Suggested activity: Before each lesson, set clear objectives, expectations of students, and rules so that your kids won’t be confused, and they will have clear goals to work towards.
Resources: [MODULE & SHEETS] Setting Objectives and Providing Feedback
Words of motivation for students:
"You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream." C.S. Lewis

5. Keep the lessons fun and engaging for your kid.

Besides knowing your child’s interests and learning style, you can make the learning process engaging and fun by leveraging game-based learning—it is one of the most effective educational tools that allow the development of non-cognitive skills while paving the way for more in-depth learning.
Most importantly, games boost the students’ motivation for learning as their minds experience pleasure and competitiveness while learning new things.
Suggested activity: At least once a week, play board games with your children—ones that have an educational value.
Resources: Chess board, Scrabble, Monopoly, Puzzle Pieces
Words of motivation for students:
“Even though you’re growing up, you should never stop having fun.” Nina Dobrev

6. Remember the EVC model.

EVC stands for Expectancy – Value – Cost—this model will help you motivate your child to learn and predict your child’s behaviors towards achievement while in the learning process.
Expectancy defines your child’s expectation in succeeding when a task is assigned—this motivates the students as they feel empowered to meet and even exceed the learning objectives.
Value defines how the students perceive the importance of engaging in the learning process or participating in a task—it brings meaning to what needs to be done because your kid understands why the tasks are valuable.
Cost defines the hurdles that prevent the children’s capacity to succeed on a certain task in the learning process. While some kids expect to succeed, others might see obstacles which could decrease student motivation.
Suggested activity: Before letting the student perform an academic activity, consider asking the following questions:
  • Expectancy – Can my student do the task?
  • Value – Does my student want to do the task?
  • Cost – Are my students free of hurdles that prevent them from investing their resources, time, energy, attention to the task at hand?
Resources: [MODULE] Free Learning Activities for Kids
Words of motivation for students:
“Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today.” Malcolm X

7. Keep encouraging your child and offering incentives.

Students thrive in positive reinforcement and approval from parents, teachers, and tutors alike. Your kids will become more motivated to learn if they feel that their work is valued and recognized.
So, encourage your students to think freely and communicate openly, and make sure to praise them often and acknowledge their contributions. A “great work” or “job well done” can go a long way in motivating your child to learn.
Also, offering your children small incentives can make the learning process more fun and motivating—think about incentives that can range from small to large, and don’t forget to give a special privilege to an exemplary student.
Suggested activity: Conduct a recitation activity and make sure to utilize positive reinforcement and words of affirmation.

Words of motivation for students:
“Strive for progress, not perfection.” Unknown

8. Let your kid practice autonomy.

Autonomy can boost students’ motivation for learning—by giving them freedom of choice, you can tap better on their interests and allow them to perform well according to their learning styles. Practicing autonomy can include letting students have a voice in their seating arrangement, choosing their group members, or selecting a few choices in a list of homework.
Suggested activity: List several activities you can do for the day and let your children choose a few according to their interests (e.g., list 10 science experiment options and let your child pick 5).

Words of motivation for students:
“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose. You’re on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the one who’ll decide where to go.” Dr. Seuss

9. Change the scenery once in a while.

While the classroom or study room is an excellent place for learning, sitting at a desk every day can make the learning process a bit uninteresting for some learners. So, make sure to jazz it up a bit by allowing your students to learn outside of their classroom or study room.
If possible, take your kids to field trips and amusement parks, conduct experiments in the garden, or go to the library for research.
Suggested activity: Depending on the current lesson, schedule a field trip activity at least once a month.
Resources: [BLOG POST] 49 Fun & Educational Field Trip Ideas
Words of motivation for students:
“Knowing Is Not Enough; We Must Apply. Wishing Is Not Enough; We Must Do.” Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe

10. Give your children responsibility and allow them to work together as students.

Assigning tasks to your kids, such as classroom jobs is a great avenue to build camaraderie which boosts the students motivation for learning. Contrary to adults’ belief, young students find classroom responsibilities as a privilege instead of a burden. So, most of them will work hard and make sure that their classmates are also meeting your expectations.
Also, allow your children to work together and take turns in leading the activities assigned to them as a group.
Suggested activity: Create a plan that will grant responsibility to the kids, such as household chores, classroom activities, and group projects.
Resources: [CHARTS] Free Printable Weekly Chore Charts
Words of motivation for students:
"Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much." Helen Keller

11. Set high but attainable goals for the kids

Learning motivation for children also requires pushing them to do more than the bare minimum. If you don’t, your students won’t also seek to push themselves on their own. So, set high but attainable goals because children love challenges and will most likely work better to meet high expectations so long as they are convinced that the goals set are within their reach.
Suggested activity: Goal setting with your kids.
Resources: [ARTICLE] Goal Setting for Students, Kids, and Teens
Words of motivation for students:
“Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible.” Anthony Robbins

12. Make sure to provide constructive feedback and give lots of room for improvement.

Children who are struggling in class may find motivation for learning scarce, and they often become frustrated. If this happens, it’s vital that you, as the parent, teacher, or tutor, provides constructive feedback that will help them effectively progress in the learning process.
Teach the kids where they went wrong and what they can do to improve next time, and make sure that you give them lots of room for improvement.
Suggested activity: Once a week, conduct a mini-coaching session with your child so that you are up-to-date on where he or she is, not just academically, but also emotionally and intellectually.
Resources: [BLOG POST] 20 Ways To Provide Effective Feedback For Learning
Words of motivation for students:
“Success is stumbling from failure to failure with no loss of enthusiasm.” Winston Churchill

13. Leverage role models

Learning motivation for children includes seeking role models who will help them see the relevance of each subject matter. A study shows that students find a teacher as their role model who makes them more interested in learning science.
Now, remember that role models can vary from one child to another due to differences in age, social circles, and gender.
Suggested activity: Once in a while, explain to your child what a role model is and ask them who they look up to as a role model and incorporate that person to his or her learning process.
Resources: [BLOG POST] Introducing Kids To Positive Role Models
Words of motivation for students:
“Pick your role models wisely.” Lana Del Rey

14. Take advantage of peer models

Using peer models can also be an excellent motivation for learning. Children learn when they see their peers succeed at a task—peers can also be their co-students or anyone who the child identifies with, and are usually drawn from groups according to age, gender, clothing styles, ethnicity, achievement level, and interests.
Suggested activity: Ask your kids who their peers are and what they like about them, and let the children discover the positive attributes of their peers that they can use in their achievement.

Words of motivation for students:
“Be careful of the environment you choose for it will shape you; be careful the friends you choose for you will become like them.” W. Clement Stone

15. Encourage your kid to exercise.

Exercise activities help boost learning motivation for children by releasing pent-up energy that usually leads to a loss in focus when studying thereby making the child frustrated. Teach your kid that regular exercise or play time outside under the sun improves overall well-being.
Suggested activity: Each day, allow your child to have plenty of physical activities before he or she gets on her desk to study—a quick walk around the block or some interactive fitness video games.

16. Create a study plan with your child.

Student motivation for learning demands structure. So, a concrete and strategic study plan is necessary to ensure that your child is on track. Involve your child when creating a study plan so that you can make sure that he or she taps on his or her interest and learning styles. Also, this is a great practice of building learning autonomy.
Suggested activity: Once a week, sit down with your kids and create a study plan for homework, exams, and other subjects your children may find a little bit difficult.
Resources: [PDF] Study Timetable Template
Words of motivation for students:
“It always seems impossible until it’s done” Nelson Mandela

17. Allow an easy study time and environment.

Besides giving proper study time breaks, you can motivate your child to learn and study more by providing him or her with everything necessary to get the job done well, such as a quiet space, food and drink, the right tools (i.e., a calculator, papers, eraser, pencils, etc.)
Suggested activity: Every day, check on your children and ask them if they are comfortable with the space you provided for them to study and if they need anything else to help them focus or learn better.
Resources: [IMAGES] 60+ Study Room Ideas for Kids
Words of motivation for students:
“Motivation is what sets you in motion, habit is what keeps you going” Jim Ryun

18. Build a reward system that will excite your child.

Reward systems are a huge help in the students motivation for learning. Besides offering incentives which can be given anytime, reward systems are a structure that your child can look forward to or get excited about after completing challenging school work or homework.
Suggested activity: Once study time is complete, allow your kids to play video games or watch TV or collect points that they can use for something special.
Resources: [PRINTABLES] Reward System for Kids
Words of motivation for students:
“‎Determination, effort, and practice are rewarded with success.” Mary Lydon Simonsen

19. Help your kid cope up with stress through encouraging conversations about thoughts and emotions.

Stress is inevitable, especially in formal education that nowadays are going online. Motivate your child to learn by helping him or her limit stress. Stressed children find it difficult to find the motivation and focus on studying or learning anything. Talk with your kids and ask them about their thoughts and emotions, not just towards their academic life but their life in general.
Suggested activity: Each night, allow your child to de-stress and talk about possible activities to do during study breaks or after study time, such as listening to music, playing some board games, coloring a book, or going for a short walk with the dog.
Resources: [ARTICLE] How to Help children and teens manage their stress
Words of motivation for students:
“Taking a break can lead to breakthroughs.” Russell Eric Dobda

20. Track your child’s progress.

Motivation for learning requires tracking progress because, often, children find it difficult to track their progress or see how far they have come, especially when they encounter difficult subjects. Progress tracking can be used by teachers, parents, and even students so that each one can visually perceive how much the kid is learning, whether it’s daily, weekly, monthly, or yearly.
Suggested activity: Every week or after each month, sit with your child and discuss their progress on learning—talk about areas that need improvement, and, most importantly, recognize their strengths.

December 2020 - Japan is closed to International Tourism at this time, with entry only granted if you are a Foreign Resident of Japan, Japanese National, or an individual with special exemptions. Countries have been added to the exemption list as of October 30th, but be advised this is for business purposes only and attempting to enter Japan without the proper documentation may result in being refused boarding at the airport, or any refunds on tickets.

Travel and Tourism in 2021 - Discussions for possible re-opening in April 2021 have been floated, but we firmly suggest that users wait until official Government announcements are made, and protocol for Tourism is established before booking or rebooking any flights, hotels, or other forms of entertainment for any future trips. Currently, there is no indication that International Tourism will be allowed in April of 2021, and it is best to assume that the border may not reopen to the world until July 2021 instead. Posts on this topic will be removed from the sub as there is no firm indication on when this decision will be made.

Tokyo Olympics 2021 - Recent developments regarding ticket sales and refunds for the 2021 Olympics have been noted below. Ticket refunds requested by ticket holders are being processed, and new sales will be determined by the amount of seats available to the public once Covid-19 measures are agreed upon and applied to the Olympic Venues in 2021.

12/03 - From The Japan Times - Japan To Allow 'Large-Scale' Overseas Visitor Numbers For Tokyo Olympics, Nikkei Reports. Japan aims to admit “large-scale” numbers of overseas visitors for the Tokyo Olympic Games without mandatory vaccinations or quarantines, provided tourists submit negative coronavirus test results and download smartphone tracking apps on arrival, the Nikkei business daily reported Wednesday. The report, which did not identify the source of the information or detail how many visitors would be allowed, also said Japan would not restrict tourists from using public transportation systems. Under current restrictions imposed to curb the spread of COVID-19, travelers are required to self-isolate for 14 days on arrival in Japan as well as sign up for contact-tracing apps. Tokyo organizers were not immediately available for comment when contacted by Reuters.
12/03 - From NHK News - Suga Plans To Extend Go To Travel Campaign. Suga acknowledged that Japan has seen a continued rise in new coronavirus cases recently, but he said that his government intends to continue with the Go To Travel campaign in an effort to keep jobs, under its policy of protecting both people's lives and their livelihoods. October 2020 Summary - Confirmed Cases - 102,166 - Deaths - 1,783
October's new was also minimal, barring some specific developments. The Japanese Government began a Go-To Dinging campaign for local dining in Tokyo, in an effort to boost demand for those industries still suffering from low patronization during the pandemic. It was announced that the Government was also considering ways to lift the Tourism shutdown imposed on International travel on a trial basis earlier than the expected re-opening date of July for the Tokyo Olympics. Public opinion is reigniting debate on the Games, as there is a high likelihood that the influx of tourists, athletes, coaches, trainers, celebrities, journalists, politicians and spectators could trigger another widespread outbreak. As a result, specialized contact tracing methods are being developed to adapt to the massive scale of the work required to keep as many people safe as possible.
September 2020 Summary - Confirmed Cases - 84,414 - Deaths - 1,588
September was a smattering of news regarding tourism, as places like Okinawa began to ease a State Of Emergency due to a surge in local cases. The IOC began to edge towards the idea of easing virus restrictions for athletes that would compete in the 2021 Olympics, and the WHO admitted a vaccine that was tested and proven safe would be unlikely until mid-2021. The IOC did confirm their resolve that the 2021 Games would happen, with or without Covid-19, and by the end of September, they began the task of cutting costs intended to simplify the Games in order to have measures in place to counter the pandemic concerns from the international community.
August 2020 Summary - Confirmed Cases - 68,200 - Deaths - 1,285
As we made our way into August concern about Obon in Japan began to rise, as infections in Tokyo especially began to increase. Tokyo's Governor began asking residents to refrain from traditional travel to hometowns, and to stay home as much as possible to curb the spread. Meanwhile, the Government worked on plans to convene an expert panel to shore up defense against the virus. Full-fledged antigen testing started at Narita, in preparation for re-opening the borders to business entry, and allowance of residents to return home. This test is saliva based, allowing a faster return time on results, but all new arrivals to Japan are still required to comply with a 14 day quarantine - many in hotels before they can return to their proper residences. Late August confirmed what many had feared - Japan was enduring a second wave of the outbreak of COVID-19. Tateda Kazuhiro of Japanese Association for Infectious Diseases said, "We are now in the midst of a second wave. People may think coronavirus infections have peaked out, both in Tokyo and nationwide. But we need to closely monitor the situation for whether a resurgence is underway." Tateda said the situation may be worse now than a few months back. The Japanese Government finally announced that re-entry for Residents of Japan with certain statuses would be allowed as of September 1st. Detailed on the MOFA website, this opens up the borders for Foreign Residents who have status for re-entry - namely “Permanent Resident”,”Spouse or Child of Japanese National”, “Spouse or Child of Permanent Resident” and “Long Term Resident” (including the spouse of a Japanese national or Japanese child who does not have these statuses of residence; the same applies hereinafter) - and those who have special exceptional circumstances as noted by the Embassy of their home country. As the month wound down, Japan Airlines revealed a new check-in machine for Arrivals to Japan, Two machines will be tested until September 15. After this, Japan Airlines will decide whether to go ahead with a full-scale roll out of the machines based on passengers' reactions. All Nippon Airways has allowed passengers traveling with infants, and those transferring from international flights, to complete domestic check-in online. Until recently, the company had requested that such passengers stop by the check-in counter.
July 2020 Summary - Confirmed Cases - 35,521 - Deaths - 1,020
As July started, Tokyo confirmed another 67 cases and the Government began to prepare for a possible surge in infections citywide. While the IOC continued to state that the decision to hold off on the Olympics in 2021 can wait until later, Japan began to look to reopening the borders to specific people, as certain citizens are already allowed to begin travel to Japan for business and work purposes. Major airports began to set up PCR test centers to help restore Int'l travel but cases began to rise again in the city and around the country. Coronavirus cases exceeded 30,000 in late July, and the Governor of Tokyo is exploring the possibility of calling another State of Emergency for the city in August. Okinawa Gov. Denny Tamaki is expected to also declare a state of emergency after the prefecture reported 72 new cases, posting a record for five straight days, according to the Okinawa Times.
June 2020 Summary - Confirmed Cases - 18,631 - Deaths - 972
In early June, Tokyo began the move to Step 2 of the recovery plan after the previous SOE was lifted, but faced a spike in infections shortly thereafter. They also added another 18 countries to the Ban Entry list, and confirmed suspiciouns that the IOC would require the Olympics to be held in 2021 - or not at all. The IOC says they will have a plan finalized for the 2021 Olympics in September 2020. Mid-month, the Japanese government revealed it was beginning a plan to allow up to 250 businesspeople into the country each day from areas like Australia, New Zealand, Thailand and Vietnam. Cancellations continued with the announcement that the Formula 1 race held in Japan would be cancelled this year, but reopenings were also declared at Universal Studios Japan and Tokyo Disney Parks. Businesspeople from Vietnam became the first to be allowed into the country after a long closure to flights due to the virus. At the end of the month, Japan declared the border closure to continue into July, and added another 18 nations to the entry ban.
May 2020 Summary - Confirmed Cases - 16,759 - Deaths - 882
The State of Emergency that began in April was extended in May due to the strain presented on the medical system, even though daily infections were seeing a downturn. A mere 10 days later, it was revealed the SOE would be lifted in 39 prefectures, but remain in places like Tokyo, Hokkaido and Osaka to further alleviate concerns with the health care system. 12 more countries were added to the Travel Ban list in the meantime. The SOE was later lifted for the areas still covered, such as Tokyo, Osaka and Hokkaido after consultation with the COVID-19 panel. It was also revealed that if the Tokyo Olympics could not go on in 2021 due to COVID-19 spread, they would be cancelled outright, although the IOC advised they are doing their best to plan for as many possible outcomes as they could. Kitakyushu, newly reopened, began to see a rise in the spread of infections and immediately began closing attractions to curb the spread. The current round of closures is expected to last until at least June 18th. Finally, after widespread confusion, Japan quelled rumours it would pay for half of tourists' expenses as a poorly sourced article had indicated. This article was clarified in english to state that the credit would only apply to local, domestic tourism within the country - and as there is no indication the borders will reopen any time soon it is prudent to advise this will not apply to International tourists at all. As new cases begin to surface again in Tokyo, the Minister in charge of the virus response says there are no plans in place to revive the State Of Emergency for Tokyo or Kitakyushu.
April 2020 Summary - Confirmed Cases - 14,119 - Deaths - 435
With the virus increasing in spread Japan began increasing travel restrictions into the country on April 3rd, including Canada, the UK, Greece and most of Europe. As travel restrictions increased and flights were getting scarce, foreigners were given an automatic Visa Renewal of 3 months, no application necessary. A State of Emergency was declared, initially for only 7 prefectures, but it was then shifted nationwide on April 16th further restricting movement to, from, and within the country. On April 29th, Japan added 14 more countries to the ban list, barring citizens or those who had traveled to many parts of Europe, Asia and the Caribbean.
March 2020 Summary
The reality of the pandemic spread began to set in worldwide and countries began issuing Travel Advisories to their citizens and urging them to return home immediately. 14 day quarantine on arrival for some countries was requested by officials, and towards the end of the month, Japan posted travel bans for citizens from China, Korea, the USA and parts of Europe that were already seeing a large increase in the spread of the virus. The Tokyo Olympics were postponed officially, with a re-start date of July 23rd, 2021 being selected. Trains in Japan began to set slower schedules, due to the lack of tourists and locals traveling in order to curb the spread of the virus.
January 2020 Summary
01/31 - The NHK has published an article reporting that JNTO has a phone number to call should tourists currently in Japan require assistance. The Japan National Tourism Organization is offering phone consultation services for foreign tourists who are concerned about the new strain of coronavirus. "Actress Drew Sidora is known for her performances in the Disney Channel series “That’s So Raven,” the VH1 biopic “CrazySexyCool: The TLC Story” and the dance film “Step Up.”
The Olympia Fields native plays the role of wife, mother and actress in a pandemic on the new season of “The Real Housewives of Atlanta,” which is scheduled to premiere at 7 p.m. Sunday on the Bravo network.
Viewers meet Sidora, 37, on Season 13′s second episode, which is set to air Dec. 13. The Rich Central High School graduate, who is married to business executive Ralph Pittman, is raising three children. She has the unenviable task of joining the cast of a long-running TV show that has become the flagship of “The Real Housewives” brand, thanks to notable personalities such as NeNe Leakes (who is not slated to return for Season 13) and Kenya Moore (who is back).
Sidora’s drama seems to center around her husband’s mysterious three-day disappearance. Her mother also lives in their home. She said her father is battling Alzheimer’s disease in an Illinois nursing home. Sidora chatted with the Tribune about her time on “The Real Housewives” in a recent phone interview. The following transcript has been edited for clarity and condensed for space.
Q. What made you decide to sign up for the “Housewives?”
A. It was just one of those things. I was approached back in 2015 to join the show. I was pregnant with my now-5-year-old, and while I was in Chicago visiting family, my water broke. I was only 28 weeks, so I was actually transferred and admitted into Rush (hospital). I was there for like five weeks, ordered to bed rest and delivered Machai, 4 pounds, 4 ounces, at 32 weeks. So we kind of just stayed there, and I was like, now’s not the right time.
It just wasn’t good timing, so when they came back around, we were just moving to Atlanta. I got a chance to hang out with (former cast member) Eva Marcille and (cast member) Cynthia (Bailey) at her wine cellar opening (last year). And that’s when it was like, all right, this is awesome. And so this year, here we are. So, it was kind of God. It was like, all right, three times. Three-time charm. This was the third time, and it just felt really like perfect timing.
After everything we’ve gone through this year for 2020, it was just like, why not? Why not open myself to let people get to know the real me that I usually can’t show in any movie or TV show I would ever do? This is going to be just raw and really just introduce the world to who I am as a person.
Q. Besides Eva and Cynthia, did you know any of the other cast members before joining the show?
A. I knew Porsha (Williams). I had done an interview on Dish, so I got a chance to hang out with her. She’s my neighbor, so she literally lives six minutes away from me. That was awesome. Also Shamea (Morton), who’s a friend on the show, she was in the TLC biopic, so I had met her a few years back when we filmed that movie.
Q. Was it difficult to join a show with 12 seasons of history?
A. It’s an amazing show. I know I watched the show over the course of the years. Before we started filming, I went back to Season 1 and just really got more familiar with everything. I think it’s just awesome to see what the ladies have been able to do as far as their businesses are concerned and just really showcasing how as women we can get along. We can have fun. I’m sure you have girlfriends. You know sometimes everything’s not perfect, and you have to have those tough conversations or disagreements, or whatever. I was just excited to meet the ladies. Obviously everyone’s been super awesome and just very inviting toward me. Not that everything’s perfect — but most of them are just really enjoyable, and (I’m) just getting to know each and every one of them.
Q. When did you become a fan of “The Real Housewives of Atlanta?”
A. I would definitely say my family, they’ve been super fans, so just watching it with them. I absolutely love NeNe and wishing her well. She opened the door to this franchise, and I thought she was amazing on the show. Very, very entertaining. For me, it was just about showing myself. I’ve had three surgeries on my Achilles, and my dad has Alzheimer’s, and just what I go through. I feel like just being able to share that and open my home, hopefully to inspire somebody and just to show as an actor, this is also my life. It’s not always glitz and glamour and just show that journey of an actor that you wouldn’t get to see on any film or television show that I’ve done.
Q. A (Bravo) news release mentions some marital troubles. Can you give us some more details of what the viewers will see this season?
A. Oh, Lord. They’re going to see just us. Just the Pittmans. Obviously, my husband left for three days. I did not know where he was. That was just a thing that I thought we would never be showing to 30 million viewers, but it happened. You’re going to just see us really trying to figure this marriage thing out for the sake of our family and for what we came together and for the love that we do share. We’re just really trying to be better. We’re in counseling, so you’ll be able to see that journey as it plays out. We’re just really working hard to save our marriage.
Q. You know that being on the show is usually a marriage killer, though? There’s kind of a curse that happens to couples when they go on “The Real Housewives.”
A. I refute that though because my mom is a pastor, and we do a lot of praying in our house. I don’t think the show could make or break your marriage. I think it just would probably bring things to the forefront that you may try to ignore. And so I feel like if the marriage is supposed to work, it’s going to work whether you’re on this show or not. I really feel like for us, it’s been very instrumental in helping. I’ve had to have really tough conversations and really be vulnerable, and I think, honestly, it’s brought us closer because we’re doing the work. We’re committed to our counseling sessions. We’re committed to doing our homework and really staying together, and that’s just a decision that we’ve made. Of course we’re not going to let anything come between that, but I think being able to show that to the world — marriage is not easy; divorce is not the first thing you have to do — that’s what really (we) are most excited to share.
Q. And how much will we see of your three children this season?
A. Oh, they’re all over the place! It’s a pandemic. They’re in virtual schools. They’re in the house, literally, all the time, and so you’ll see them. We don’t have a nanny. We’re just getting settled, and we’re like schoolteachers. We’re everything. They have been a very intricate part of what you will see this season for sure.
Q. “The Real Housewives” is known for escapism, but the new season begins with the pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement. How do you feel about the shift in tone this season?
A. It’s going to be powerful because Black Lives Matter, that’s a big deal. And it’s something that we definitely need to keep the conversation going in, so that we can continue to do what’s right and fight for equal justice and equality and better gun laws, gun reform. And now we have a new president! I think all of that is really what we’re going through, so it’s very real. It’s very raw. I think it’s great that Bravo decided to showcase that because the world needs to see that.
Q. Now that you’re on the show, what was one thing that surprised you since you’ve been behind the scenes?
A. I was very shocked. I’m like, oh, cameras are here. I’m used to takes, multiple takes, and a director, and all of those things. And this is way different. I’m definitely able to say this is a challenge for me. This is something new, but it’s definitely exciting. What you see is what you get. It is very raw. We did not plan this stuff. It just is what it is, so that was definitely just different from what I’m used to.
Q. What other TV and film projects do you have coming up?
A. Right now I’m on “Influence,” which is an adaptation of Carl Weber’s New York Times bestselling book “Influence.” It’s streaming right now on BET and BET Plus. It stars Deborah Cox, ohmigod, so many amazing people. Kellita Smith. Amazing cast. Columbus Short. That project I’m really, really, really excited about. I also am directing my first film next year. We’re in preproduction for that right now.
Q. How has the pandemic affected your career?
A. Oh, majorly. One thing through this whole pandemic, when my checks stopped, I was like, wait a minute. I still have a family. It forced me to challenge myself to realize the importance of creating your own content, so I immediately started my production company. My husband and I started Eudora Entertainment, which is a full-fledged production company. We just got distribution through eOne. We just wrapped production of our first film. Really kudos to the pandemic because although it was difficult, although it’s been super-challenging, it really forced a lot of people to just think outside of the box.
I’ve been in front of the camera, but definitely for me, getting behind the camera is going to open up so many doors to actors that may have never had the opportunity. That’s what I’m most excited about, but the pandemic really pushed me to that. To realize, you’ve got to get out here and create your own content. Get online. Do more. Write more. I’m grateful for that because the industry, Hollywood, shut down for a really long time, and you couldn’t travel. So there were projects that I was slated to do and productions went down because they couldn’t work. I was like, OK, that’s not going to happen. I’m going to create my content and try to make sure that that never happens. I’m always able to work even through a pandemic.
Q. And what do you want the viewers to know about you as they’re watching you on the show?
A. I just want them to know Drew Sidora Pittman, the wife, the mother and the actress, and really just be gentle with me. I am not perfect, and I think that’s what you will see is that I am on a journey of really just getting back to myself. I’m rehabbing my Achilles and just really inspiring people, hopefully, to know no matter what you’re going through, you can push through anything, even during a pandemic.
Q. How often do you get back to the Chicago area?
A. Normally, if we weren’t in a pandemic, I would be home twice a month visiting my dad, visiting my family. I haven’t been there now in seven months. I’m hoping, maybe when things get safe again, I can go visit around the holidays or top of next year because I really do miss my family. I had a dream about my dad last night. I woke up in tears just really wanting to see him. I’m really hoping sooner than later I’ll be able to get out to Chicago. I love my city. I need some Garrett Popcorn right about now. I need some Harold’s Chicken, so I’m definitely going to be there very soon.
Q. Now that you have a season under your belt, do you think Chicago should have its own edition of “The Real Housewives?”
A. I would love that. We have one of the most amazing cities (and) Lake Michigan. I think the world needs a Chicago “Real Housewives” franchise ASAP."
"Garcelle Beauvais' Thanksgiving wasn't exactly celebratory. The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star spent the day, which also happened to be her 54th birthday, isolating due to a COVID-19 scare on the set of Housewives. ET was first to report that production on the show's 11th season was halted last week after a crew member tested positive for the coronavirus.
"We shot for Housewives on Tuesday, Tuesday night we got home and found out that a few people in our crew tested positive for COVID," Garcelle confesses in ET's first look at this Tuesday's episode of The Real. Garcelle says she and her castmates all have to quarantine for 14 days, and her 13-year-old twin sons, Jaid and Jax, are temporarily staying with their father, Garcelle's ex-husband, Mike Nilon.
"We do all the protocols," Garcelle tells her Real co-hosts. "We get tested at least three times a week. We get tested before we shoot. You know, my kids get tested, I get tested, anybody who's in my household, and you know, we did the right things, but at the same time, it just shows you that this virus -- you can touch something, you can… you know, it's not necessarily just from people."
"Hopefully everybody will be healthy, and we're down for a few weeks, but then we'll be back to work," she adds. "But luckily for me, we do The Real from home, so I can still do this job, which I’m thankful for."
Garcelle says she has no symptoms, has had multiple negative coronavirus tests and continues to be tested multiple times a week amid her quarantine.
Season 11 of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills will feature Garcelle alongside Lisa Rinna, Kyle Richards, Dorit Kemsley, Erika Jayne, Sutton Stracke, as well as new 'Wife Crystal Kung Minkoff and new "friend of" Kathy Hilton. It’s slated to premiere in 2021."

Another has rubbed shoulders with Donald Trump, while a third is a 57-year-old thrill-seeker.
They are among seven glamorous and successful women aiming to put Jersey back in the TV spotlight in a new reality show.
The Channel Island's first small screen claim to fame came in the Seventies with Enemy At The Door, about wartime life under Nazi occupation.
But perhaps Jersey is still best known to many viewers as the setting for Eighties detective drama Bergerac, starring John Nettles as unorthodox ex-cop Jim Bergerac.
Now The Real Housewives Of Jersey hope to show viewers a different side of island life.
The ITV reality series aims to portray everything from its picturesque tranquil beaches to the glitzy party scene.
And yesterday the cast of the show, which will begin airing at the end of the month on ITVBe, was unveiled.
Tessa Hartmann, mother of British singer and X Factor contestant Tallia Storm, will be joined by businesswoman Ashley Cairney and natural medicine guru Hedi Green.
Fashionista Jane Rayner, socialite Kate Taylor, model Mia Ledbury and estate agent Margaret Thompson round off the cast.
A short trailer gives a glimpse into the women's lifestyles as they are seen swimming in a luxurious outdoor infinity pool, getting off a private jet and, of course, sipping champagne.
ITV says the ten-part series 'will follow the highs and lows of our marvellous Housewives and their families who all live life to the full on the island while bringing fun, laughter, tears and of course, plenty of glamour'.
It is the second UK version of The Real Housewives franchise – there are more than a dozen covering various parts of the US but the only British location until now has been the award-winning The Real Housewives Of Cheshire.
Executive producer Mike Swindells said: 'Having spent an incredible summer embracing all that the beautiful island of Jersey offers, we can't wait to introduce the world to this magnificent location and our raft of exceptional new Housewives.
'As viewers would expect, the lives of The Real Housewives of Jersey are as complicated as ever.'
The entire series will be available to watch on the ITV Hub on the same day it launches on ITVBe, in the week after Christmas. Here we profile the programme's seven stars.
She may be a 57-year-old mother of three daughters but that doesn't stop Hedi Green skydiving, motorbike riding and paddleboarding.
The 'warrior of life' has lived in Jersey for 35 years. A practitioner of natural medicine who believes in the energy of earth and healing, she has three clinics.
Originally from the Midlands, Jane Rayner, 56, has been living in Jersey for five years. The fashionista is twice divorced and currently engaged – so hoping it'll be third time lucky.
Sir David Attenborough is one of her heroes and she is keen to do her bit to protect the environment.
At 58, Margaret Thompson is the oldest Housewife. She moved to the island when she was 18 and has worked her way up from pot washer to the self-styled 'Queen of Jersey property'.
Originally from Scotland, Miss Thompson was pictured rubbing shoulders with Donald Trump at a New Year party in 2016. Her dogs have their own following on Instagram.
Kate Taylor, 51, has lived on the island for 30 years and has become well known on the Jersey social scene for her gregarious character and extravagant outfits.
She is an ambassador for a number of charities and is into yoga and wellness.
Tessa Hartmann, 50, is the mother of singer Tallia Storm.
She is originally from Scotland and moved to Jersey five years ago with her husband, composer and film director Sascha Hartmann.
The couple began their PR agency Hartmann Media in 1996 and she has represented designers including Louis Vuitton and Ralph Lauren.
Former model Mia Ledbury, 44, originally from Australia, moved to Jersey only five years ago with her husband Dan and their two daughters.
She is beginning to dip her toe back into the modelling world after taking a break to have children.
Ashley Cairney, at 31 the youngest Housewife, is the only Jersey-born girl on the show and a self-made businesswoman.
She is married to Ben, her high school sweetheart whom she has been with since the age of 17, and the couple have two young children.
They each run their own business on the island."
In a series of November 30 Instagram Stories, Jo revealed, “We are doing the thing that all new couples should do when they first start dating.”
“Maybe not when they first start dating,” Taran chimed in.
“OK, and we are doing the thing that all couples should do before getting engaged one day,” Jo clarified. “Take a long road trip together. So we are off to San Francisco, which is about a good eight hours away. But knowing all of the stops we’re going to do, it will be 11.”
Jo previously introduced Taran to her Instagram followers and podcast listeners. In an October 3 post in celebration of National Boyfriend Day, Jo shared a selfie of the two with a heartfelt caption.
“My whole heart and soul. If you’ve been listening to PopCandy for the last few months now, you’ve been hearing me gush about ‘Broadway Boy’ and sharing our crazy story about meeting in the middle of COVID. Happy to finally show you the handsome face behind the name and why my heart has felt so full these days,” Jo wrote. “@tarangraymusic thank you for being a light and a gift in my life.”
Taran commented on Jo’s sweet post to add, “I love you baby girl. I wouldn’t want to battle this year the way we have with anyone else.”
In a later Instagram post, Jo revealed that the pair met virtually and kept in contact for a bit before meeting in person.
“Found this pic of our first time ever meeting after 3 months of COVID dating over a screen! Can you tell how excited we were to finally meet in real life?” Jo wrote. “I think I’ll keep him!”
Jo even shared a little dating advice with a follower who commented on the post, “I might actually try again if I could find a sweetheart like you. I haven’t dated for 10 years.” Jo shared the secret to her romantic success, writing in response, “Try Hinge. That’s where we met and I think the best pool of quality people who are looking for love there, but that was just my experience having tried all the major dating apps.”
"In the November 29 episode of The Real Housewives of Potomac, we got a glimpse at the newest addition to Karen Huger’s House of La’Dame and one of her "best projects to date," La'Dame by Karen Huger X RPGShow. Karen teamed up with her hairstylist, Steven Thomas (also known as "The Hair Doc") and launched an exclusive wig line, which she introduced to the rest of the ‘Wives during her “Wig Shift” party.
We recently caught up with Karen and Steven and got all the tea on how this "bold and sexy" wig line came to be. Read on to learn how these two create their hair magic.
What inspired you two to launch a wig line and what has that process been like?
Karen Huger: I have worn wigs for quite some time. I had that wig shift on national TV and that was my aha moment. So, I had been looking to develop my own wig line — one that fit and feels wonderful. When RPGShow presented the opportunity to work together to create the collaboration, I knew I wanted Steven to be by my side as the creative director. He is a genius hairstylist!
Steven Thomas: Creating this wig line with Karen is one of my best projects to date. It's gratifying and has allowed myself and Karen to get closer and bond. Karen gives me freedom to fly creatively with her guidance, which is the ultimate reason why I love being a part of her glam team!
How did you start working together?
KH: A few years ago I was looking for a new hairstylist and I heard about Steven. As you know your hairstylist is someone who you spend quality time with. Once we met, it was pure magic.
What is your work dynamic like when creating hairstyles?
KH: There are just some people in your life with whom you gel effortlessly. When I find a look I want, I discuss it with Steven and he styles my wigs with that goal in mind — with a bit of Hair Doc extra.
Do you ever disagree on what looks good?
KH: We work together and feed off of each other to get to what I envisioned... then we end up elevating the look!
Has Karen's style changed at all since working with Steven?
KH: My style has evolved. I always have my classic look, now just with a modern twist.
How do you choose the wig looks you're going to create?
KH: I think about what women want and what women need to help empower themselves to be the best they can be. If there is one thing I know, it’s that if you’re having a great hair day, nothing can stop you.
Explain the meaning behind your wigs' different names.
KH: Each of the wigs in my bold and sexy line has her own personality/mood. Victoria, for example, she's a queen. She goes from boardroom meetings to a night out with her friends. She’s powerful, intelligent, sultry, elegant, and versatile. When you wear one of the wigs from my collection you'll know the Grande Dame is by your side.
What do you have planned next for your La’Dame empire?
KH: La'Dame is not only beauty... beauty is only the beginning. I am so excited as we continue to grow. The sky's the limit!"

2020.12.02 11:35 artariel Sent a notice letter, am I free to leave?

My contract says that I have to send 2 months notice letter directly to landlord's address (written in the contract) before leaving. So I wrote a letter with my handwriting stating that I will be leaving the house in 2 months, and this is the date of this letter, and this is my last day. I talked to my landlord, he is okay with me leaving the house but he isn't based in UK right now, so he can't send a letter confirming the date I want to leave. Does this cause any issue? I have the certificate of posting from royal mail, I photographed the letter, is that all I need to do from my side? Can I actually leave the house in 2 months without obligations?

WE NEED A SCIENCE AND DATA BASED APPROACH TO COVID (WITHOUT GOVERNMENT OVERREACH) “Where all think alike, no one thinks very much” Walter Lippmann, 2-time Pulitzer Prize winner
Canada is a business, and as a tax paying resident, you are a shareholder. I urge you to inform yourselves of the facts and judge for yourself what the board of directors (AKA politicians) are doing.
The government is creating COVID mitigation policies based on ONE fact: Number of COVID cases
COVID case numbers have, for a large part, INCREASED because testing numbers INCREASED. In Ontario, we have gone from conducting 10000 tests per day (April 22) to 58000 tests per day (November 27). [24]
PCR tests have been shown to be scientifically meaningless for COVID. Not only do they have a large tendency to have false positives, but they are also NOT a specific confirmation of a COVID infection[25].
COVID DATA Many of the following facts are directly from government public health websites. Please go see these sources for yourselves. The numbers below are current as of Nov 26-27, 2020
Out of 11519 COVID related deaths, 89.4% of COVID deaths in Canada are in the 70+ age group.
Percentage of COVID deaths in the 0-49 age group: 0.9% (this is a total of 107 COVID deaths in Canada)
NOTE: It is important to make the distinction that just because someone dies WITH COVID does not mean that they died BECAUSE of COVID.
LONG TERM CARE HOMES 75% of all COVID deaths in Canada have been in long term care homes [1].
The average length of stay in a long-term care home, pre-COVID, was 18.7 months [2].
The sad truth is that many of the patients with COVID-related deaths at long term care facilities were going to die soon anyway, regardless of whether they contracted COVID or not. (I’m sorry, there is no gentle or kind way of putting this. Just to clarify, I’m not decreasing the value of life in long term care homes. They DO need to be protected just as much as anyone else. My point is that COVID IS NOT THE LONE KILLER as data seems to suggest.)
Average age of COVID-related death in Alberta: 82 years old.
Out of 517 COVID related deaths in Alberta, 97.7% have had 1 or more co-morbidities.
Here is the breakdown: 3 or more comorbidities: 76.3% 2 comorbidities: 16.2% 1 comorbidity: 5.3% No comorbidity: 2.3%
Again, COVID alone is not primarily to blame for the many so called COVID deaths.
Comorbidities: the simultaneous presence of 2 or more diseases/ medical conditions in a patient.
NOTE: Comorbitities included are: Diabetes, Hypertension, COPD, Cancer, Dementia, Stroke, Liver Cirrhosis, Cardiovascular diseases (including IHD and Congestive heart failure), Chronic Kidney disease, and Immuno-deficiency.
NOTE: Comorbidity information is not released by Ontario, Quebec or BC (perhaps it is not even tracked).
STATSCAN REPORT: COVID 19 DEATH COMORBIDITIES IN CANADA (from the first wave) - this is a highly recommended eye opening read
As of July 31, ALL COVID-involved deaths in Canada under the age of 45 had at least 1 other disease or condition certified on the medical certificate of death.
As a point of comparison, the most common flu comorbidities recorded from 2016-2018 were similar to those recorded for COVID-19 during the first wave.
Number of daily Ontario COVID Deaths (VS Number of COVID Ontario deaths in Long Term Care Homes) Nov 24: 35 (22) Nov 25: 21 (14) Nov 26: 20 (13) Just based on the 3 dates above, roughly 66% of COVID deaths in Ontario are still occurring in Long Term Care Homes.
ASYMPTOMATIC % At least 17% of the population is estimated to be asymptomatic to COVID [3]. This is GOOD news. It tells us that many are immune to COVID.
VITAMIN D3 DATA Vitamin D3 was shown to be deficient in 80% of hospitalized COVID patients in Spain[4].
A study in India showed that 62 of 63 severe COVID cases had a Vitamin D deficiency [5]. Overall, India has shown to have a lower strain of COVID, possibly because Vitamin D deficiency hits a much lower percentage of the population (due to more sunlight).
4000 IU daily is recommended to create a strong immune response to COVID [6].
COVID TREATMENT More good news. Doctors have improved the mortality rates of severe cases. We have gotten better at treating COVID [7].
CANADA ECONOMIC SITUATION: THE REALITY Canada Annual Deficit 2019: $19.8 Billion [8] PROJECTED Deficit for March 2021: $381.6 to $398.7 Billion [9]
This is an increase in deficit of 1927% (worst case scenario 2014%).
THIS IS REAL. This is NOT a typo. (Imagine your $20,000 student loan becoming $398,000). This is the HIGHEST deficit in Canadian history.
NOTE: The economic statement was released on Nov 30, 2020. [9]
Canada has the worst increase in deficit (in relation to GDP) in the G20 countries [10]. This is based on July data and is much worse now.
Our Minister Of Finance has resigned and been replaced by someone with no background in this field. Watch this video in Parliament of her mansplaining despite her incompetence, without answering a simple question regarding government spending limits:
The following industries have been devastated: - Aviation - Tourism - Entertainment - Hospitality - Restaurants - Gyms
Even if you don’t think these are important in day-to-day life, they are a key cog in the Canadian economy and the source of employment for many.
Our official unemployment rate in October 2020 was listed at 8.9% [11]. This is deceiving. This is artificially held low by government subsidies and by ridiculous requirements to be considered “unemployed”.
The true unemployment number could be as high as 30%, if not more [12]. That means a staggering 10 million Canadians unemployed.
Over 158,000 small to medium businesses are at risk of closing permanently (NOT A TYPO) [13]. This is based on July 2020 data, before a second lockdown, and is clearly much worse now.
On the other hand, large corporations are thriving.
The price of a lockdown is not equally borne across the Canadian population. We are all in the same storm, but not the same boat.
THE FLAWED ARGUMENT OF SAVING LIVES VS. THE ECONOMY If you believe that a lockdown puts life ahead of the economy, you have been gravely misled.
In the UK, for every 3 COVID deaths, it is estimated another 2 deaths are added due to lockdown [14].
The World Health Organization themselves “do not advocate for lockdowns as the primary means of control of this virus”[15]. Yet that has basically been Canada’s only means of fighting this virus.
Reasons for these lockdown deaths is due to restricted medical care such as - Cancelled surgeries. - Undiagnosed heart and cancer patients. - lack of accessible treatment for current patients.
Moreover, the following repercussions of a lockdown are also not taken into account - Mental Health - Suicides - Domestic Abuse - Drug Abuse and Alcoholism - Poverty - Children’s Education and Childhood Trauma
Lastly, our immunity is being lowered. We are locked down at home, with increasing mental health issues, stress, lack of sunlight and lack of exercise. This further lowers our bodies’ response to a COVID infection.
WHY IS THE GOVERNMENT STILL IMPLEMENTING SUCH DAMAGING POLICIES? DEMAGOGY: political activity or practices that seek support by appealing to the desires and prejudices of ordinary people rather than by using rational argument.
If the government changed their approach now, it would essentially mean admitting they are wrong.
How can they reverse course without getting politically skewered for going all in on what is now by far the largest public spending campaign ever, the most significant restriction on free society ever and the greatest peacetime damage ever inflicted on a generation, socially and economically, in modern history when it turns out it didn't make much of a difference?
A lockdown comes with its own collateral health damage and non-COVID deaths. However, politicians don’t have to wipe that blood off their hands. It is about “optics” and saving COVID lives only.
It is also easy to implement a policy when politicians are completely protected from the consequences of their decisions. - Their salary is insulated from economic disaster i.e. it stays the same regardless of how well (or not) they do their job. - Their large pensions are fully protected.
If the government truly cared about putting life ahead of the economy, here’s what would have happened a long time ago. - Alcohol would be banned - Tobacco would be banned - Highly processed and fried foods would be banned - Exercise would be mandatory
Doing the above would save tens of millions of lives globally. But we accept those risks despite high fatality numbers, in order to stimulate the economy. We leave the decisions to consume alcohol, eat fried foods and smoke in the hands of the people. (Yes, they are not CONTAGIOUS, but a death is a death, specially if it is preventable).
WHY IS THE PUBLIC SUPPORTING IT? For the general public, there are many working from home on a full or partially reduced salary. They have nothing to lose with a lockdown, so it is easy to support it. They are unaware of our country’s deficit or that millions are unemployed and at risk of losing everything. They are unaware that many are having long term mental health issues and that the lockdown is still taking non-COVID lives.
Most importantly, people’s support is being driven by the mass hysteria from the fear-mongering agenda and sensationalizing of news by irresponsible journalism and incompetent politicians.
WAIT, WHAT ABOUT HOSPITALS BEING OVERLOADED? WON’T LOCKDOWNS HELP WITH THAT? The truth is being hidden here. The primary problem is staff shortages [16]. This was an issue even before the pandemic. Why has the government not addressed this? Why is the public paying the price for government inadequacy?
Nevertheless, with better treatments and Vitamin D supplementation, hospitalization rates can be reduced significantly.
Other “good” news is that the majority of cases are in the younger population. The cases are less severe and require less hospitalizations.
80.4% of the 1822 Ontario COVID cases on Nov 27 were in the 0-59 age group [17].
Of all hospitalized patients in Canada since the start of the pandemic, 54.5% have been in the 70+ age group [18]. Our case load can be lowered significantly by protecting this section of the population.
THE GOVERNMENT’S COLLECTIVE FAILURE MUST BE QUESTIONED The government had 9 months to prepare for a second wave.
QUESTION: Why is the rest of Canada shut down when a distinct majority of the COVID deaths are occurring in long term care homes, in age groups of 70+ and persons with co-morbidities?
Theoretically, protecting the above demographic can prevent 90+% COVID related deaths in Canada.
QUESTION: Why are long term care facilities still experiencing COVID related deaths and not being protected better?
QUESTION: Why do thousands of small businesses have to suffer when they do not deal with the most vulnerable demographic of the population? When there is no proof that they are responsible for COVID transmissions?
Ontario COVID-19 Science Advisory Table: Restaurants, bars and clubs are the source of 0.7% of all COVID source transmissions in Ontario (NOT A TYPO) [26]. In fact, 58% of COVID cases do not know how and where the person was infected.
Our politicians are blindly flailing at theories and superstitions to control this virus. How can a politician rob someone of their entire livelihood with no clear evidence?
QUESTION: Why has there been no discussion of the extreme financial burden on the current and future generations? The national deficit may affect the rest of our lives.
QUESTION: Why has the government not put out a simple disclaimer to increase our Vitamin D3 intake, especially during the winter months? The benefits of Vitamin D was common knowledge before COVID, and is increasingly important now. It is such a simple yet effective response that can potentially protect against severe and long term effects of COVID. Perhaps, hospitals will not be as overloaded.
FYI the Scottish government has already promoted Vitamin D and rest of the UK may be following suit with free vitamin D handouts [19].
QUESTION: Why has the government not volunteered to take a pay cut, given that most of the population is suffering economically?
FYI: The New Zealand PM and her ministers took a 20% pay cut in April 2020 [28].
(SIDENOTE: A Canadian MP who only holds 6 years in office gets a lifelong pension. Even a war veteran does not get this benefit [20])
QUESTION: Why is new data on COVID not used for a science-based approach to opening up the economy? Why is a cost-benefit-result analysis not mentioned in any government policy? Why are these policies being made behind closed doors? The Ontario government has abused its emergency powers to make policies without the input of ALL members of Parliament. WATCH THE ONTARIO GOVERNMENT BEING QUESTIONED ON THIS IN PARLIAMENT
QUESTION: Why is every international arrival subject to an archaic 14-day quarantine when the Canada’s chief public health officer Dr. Tam herself has said that there is little - if any - evidence of COVID transmission aboard aircraft? [21]
Why is testing not conducted on arriving passengers? Studies have shown that 1% of passengers have tested positive for COVID [22]. Out of every 10 such COVID positive passengers, 7 are detected within 48 hours.
Isn’t it contradictory that COVID tests are considered UNRELIABLE for inbound travelers yet are the ONLY source for creating COVID mitigation policies?
While travel was the initial source for transmission, it is no longer the primary source. With mitigation measures implemented, it is one of the safest public places you can be in. Looking at air circulation on an airplane, a US Department of Defense study showed that with a mask on, only 0.003% of particles made their way to another passenger's breathing zone [27]. Airplane cabin air quality and recycling is equivalent to a hospital room. Masked and sitting next to another passenger is equivalent to being 6-7 feet from someone in a normal public environment.
QUESTION: Why have those affected financially not been given a choice? If someone has to worry about putting food on the table and a roof over their head, they should have the right to go out and make a living. Let them decide for themselves whether they are willing to risk contracting COVID (a disease with a lethality rate of under 1% for most of the Canadian population).
A blanket lockdown on the entire population, using emergency powers, is government overreach. It is an abuse of every Canadian’s rights and freedoms. We do not need every aspect of our life micromanaged.
QUESTION: What is considered essential? Who decides this? Why is the LCBO (alcohol) store open but gyms aren’t?
To every person who is about to lose their job or business, isn’t that considered ESSENTIAL?
THE OTHER SIDE IS SPEAKING OUT Anyone who speaks against the fear mongering narrative is automatically deemed as a selfish lunatic, but they need to be heard. The runaway train from the fear of early 2020 needs to be stopped.
OTHER POLITICIANS ARE ALSO SPEAKING OUT See the leadership of these fine politicians fighting on our behalf in Parliament. Please follow them.

Dr. Hodkison address to Edmonton City Council

MOVING FORWARD COVID is here now and we cannot stop or control it. It cannot be the SOLE reason behind making broad policies. Moreover, the measures we have taken are disproportionate to the threat that COVID brings. The long-term health and financial effects of a lockdown need to be considered.
We have had 9 months to prepare and learn more. A lot is still unknown about COVID but A LOT IS KNOWN (specially compared to a year ago).
Do not let fear cloud our judgement in current circumstances. There is a fine line between living with COVID vs paralyzing our lives due to COVID. We crossed that line a long time ago.
We need to have a balanced approach to managing this but ACCEPT the fact that people will die, regardless of what measures we take. We cannot expect to have 0 deaths or 0 cases. But we can lower these numbers using measures other than blanket lockdowns.
Lockdowns will only transfer lives lost. They will not save the overall excess deaths to a population.
Even a vaccine with a high efficacy will not prevent deaths. That potential vaccine is at least more than a year away for most people. Moreover, there are many who will choose not to take a vaccine.
COVID is an added threat to our life in the same way that the flu kills 230,000-650,000 people a year globally [23]. (Yes, I know COVID is more lethal).
I’m sure my opinion is wildly unpopular, in Canada and globally, but the facts are presented to you above to make your own judgement.
I agree with lockdown measures that were taken in March/April 2020, when a lot was unknown. We did not know who the virus affected and we did not have better treatment measures.
Why has the government not made any changes since then? Let’s stop resisting new information and start implementing measures that yield the same or better results (WITHOUT the collateral damage and WITHOUT overloading hospitals)

  1. Protect long term care homes.
  2. Protect the vulnerable population, and those that interact with them.
The first 2 measures alone may reduce the COVID related deaths by 90+%.
  1. Let everyone else roam free, if they CHOOSE.
  2. Increase Vitamin D intake for EVERYONE. This alone may reduce the number of hospitalizations and severe cases.
  3. BONUS MEASURE: All politicians need to take a minimum of 25% pay cut. Sign the following petition.

This is about using science (and common sense) to have a smarter approach to this pandemic. A focused protection approach will SAVE MORE LIVES and PROTECT THE ECONOMY. It’s a win-win.
Use our tax dollars for where it needs to go. Don’t use it to force people to sit at home and live off minimal government dollars, when they very well can go out and make a living with minimal danger to their life.
Enough damage has been done. Don’t make the CURE worse than the virus.
Don’t let political agendas get in the way of real help.
I’m open and respectful to hearing other opinions; similar or not. I wish the very best for everyone in this world. Moreover, I want to clarify that I am careful with my daily actions. - I wear a mask, wash my hands and try not to touch my face. - I limit my social interactions.
These are all useful measures which may have successful mitigation results, without extensive damage to society.

2020.12.01 20:23 Yousuf1212 Marc Webb and Andrew Garfield on Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy

I feel like something that many Spider-Man movie fans gloss over are how highly Marc Webb and Andrew Garfield think of the Raimi trilogy. I know there is a lot of division between the fanbases of the different live action versions of Spider-Man, especially ever since Tom Holland made his debut as the wall crawler in Captain America: Civil War, and there's a lot of toxicity amongst the fanbases of the Raimi trilogy, TASM duology and MCU Spider-Man movies, and that does sadly include the Raimi trilogy fanbase. Toxicity exists in every fanbase. The larger the fanbase, the more toxic it becomes. Just look at the Star Wars fanbase, MCU fanbase, DCEU fanbase and so on. I love the Raimi trilogy, it holds a special place in my heart and I love it more as an adult than I ever did as a kid. I am not a big fan of TASM or MCU Spider-Man movies. However, it must be remembered that films are art. Art is subjective. Personal taste is subjective. There's no need to praise a film series at the expense of belittiling other people's love for a different film series, nor is there need to insult other people for not liking a film series that you love. However, one thing that I do want to bring attention are the opinions of the people who were intimately involved in making TASM duology when talking about the Raimi trilogy, because it's a great token of respect that's rarely displayed between the fans of the Raimi trilogy and TASM duology. I also do respect Marc Webb and Andrew Garfield for their creative vision and respect for Raimi and Maguire's version of Spider-Man, even if I'm not particularly a fan of the films they made (but not a hater either). I'll start by citing a Marc Webb interview that dates all the way back to 2012:
Question: In a perfect world, selfishly, would you rather that other series of Spider-Man movies not exist?
Marc Webb: Oh, no. No. It’s something I thought about early on and it’s an important and good question to ask. But, I love those movies. I love what Sam Raimi did in that.
Source — Marc Webb, ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ Director, On The Specter Of Sam Raimi
When being asked about if he wished that Raimi's Spider-Man movies didn't exist, Marc Webb makes it conspicuously clear that he doesn't, because the loves those movies and loves what Sam Raimi did in with them.
This is the only source I could find regarding Marc Webb's thoughts on the Raimi trilogy. But so far, so good. I found a lot more from Andrew Garfield's, so let's take a look from the earliest sources, starting from 2010:
"The British star - who has replaced the Hollywood hunk in the 'Spider-Man' franchise playing a younger Peter Parker for a forthcoming prequel - has not met the 35-year-old actor who played the web-slinging hero in three previous movies, but continues to be a "massive fan" of him.
Speaking on the red carpet at the launch of the London Film Festival at the Odeon Leicester Square last night, Andrew exclusively told BANG Showbiz: "No, I haven't met with Tobey Maguire, no. But I am a massive fan of his and I loved his and Sam Raimi's 'Spider-Man' movies.
"They are equally as much a part of the importance to me as the old comics and cartoons. We're going to work hard to get this right."
Source — I've had no Spiderman advice from Tobey Maguire, says Andrew Garfield
After being announced that Andrew would replace Tobey Maguire as the wall craler for the 2012 Spider-Man reboot, Andrew shared his opinion on the Raimi trilogy, and what he said was immensly positive. The article itself notes that even though Andrew has not met Tobey so far, it nonetheless says that Andrew continued to be a "massive fan" of Tobey, and even directly quotes Andrew, saying that he is is a "massive fan of his" and that he "loved his and Sam Raimi's 'Spider-Man' movies" and even going as far as saying that Raimi movies "are equally as much a part of the importance" to him "as the old comics and cartoons" which speaks volumes of how much Andrew loved those movies when you take into account that Andrew has been a huge fan of Spider-Man whilst growing up. Here's another source a few months later:
"[Maguire] sent me a lovely message through a mutual friend," Garfield revealed. "He gave me his support, and it meant a great deal, of course, because part of the reason I love and have continued to love this character was because of his portrayal. To step into those shoes is no mean feat. It was generous of him to reach out and say something, so I'm thankful."
Source — Andrew Garfield Says Tobey Maguire Gave His 'Spider-Man' Blessing
After it was publicly announced that Andrew would play the wall crawler in the 2012 Spider-Man reboot, Tobey Maguire gave Andrew a "Spider-Man blessing" by sending a "lovely message" to Andrew through a "mutual friend," which "meant a great deal" to Andrew because "part of the reason" Andrew loved and "continued to love this character was because" of Tobey's portrayal. Andrew even says that to step into Tobey's shoes "is no mean feat" i.e. Andrew found that replacing Tobey was a great achievement for himself, because of how highly he thought of Tobey's portrayal.
Now let's fast forward to some sources from 2012, the year TASM was released:
"Andrew Garfield could find himself in trouble with his Spider-Man bosses after admitting he once bought a boot-leg copy of the superhero's first big screen outing.
The British actor is such a huge fan of the comic book superhero that he couldn't wait to see 2002's Spider-Man, and decided to buy an illegal version rather than wait for the cinema release.
He tells SFX magazine, "I actually saw that first movie before it came out. I got a pirate (boot-leg) copy of it on Portobello Road (London) market because I was so excited to see it. I was blown away by it, and watched it with my friend Terry. We were quoting it to each other. I was pretending to be Tobey and Terry said that I would never be able to be Spider-Man!"
Source — Andrew Garfield bought a boot-legged Spider-Man copy
The article notes that Andrew told SFX magazine that he "actually saw the first movie before it came out" by purchasing a pirate copy because he "was so excited to see it." And when Andrew finally saw it, he was "blown away by it" and watched it with his friend Terry. Andrew and Terry even went as far as "quoting it to each other" by "pretending to be Tobey" and Terry said to Andrew that he would never be able to be Spider-Man. That's awesome if you think about, not only because Andrew bought an illegal copy of the movie before it officially came out, but he quoted Tobey's lines from the actual movie itself. Isn't that what we Raimimemers do every day? Andrew was literally pretending to be Tobey by quoting Tobey's lines. He was a Raimimemer before most of us became a Raimimemer! And what's more interesting is that Andrew talks about this in more detail... In an actual interview with Tobey:
Tobey Maguire: This celebrity thing, it's a part of our culture. It's just what happens. How I've adjusted over the years is that essentially I try to embrace the reality of my life, to be as open and as friendly as feels natural and try not to hide because the attention can be uncomfortable at times. But I also respect my own need for privacy. The truth is, it's a very strange experience becoming really well-known. Like you said, we're humans craving a human experience. But we're also actors, and I'm sure we share that we want the projects we've worked on to do well. And we appreciate when people like them, we approach it with respect, but ultimately it all comes down to the work.
Andrew Garfield: Rright. I just feel such a great responsibility to the story and to the fans, because I know in my heart how much this character means to people, because it means that much to me. For the sake of all the people who care about it as much as I do I want to bring the character to life and make sure they're as satisfied as they can possibly be.
Tobey Maguire: That's very cool. A lot of what you've been talking about, the connectivity between you and the story and the fans, it seems like you have a great respect for the character.
Andrew Garfield: Very much so. Peter Parker is such a positive character he's pure wish fulfillment, an underdog. I grew so much from him when I was a kid, from the comics all the way up to the first movie you were in. I was 19 when I saw [Spider-Man]. I got a pirated dvd at portobello Market with my friend terry Mcguiness, and we went back to my skanky apartment in North London and we watched it twice in a row and then practiced your final line in the mirror!
Tobey Maguire: [Laughs]
Andrew Garfield: Terry has this thick accent and every time I would recite that line he would laugh this very distinct laugh and say, "No, man, you could never be fucking Spider-Man. You'll never be fucking Spider-Man!" I was so humiliated and upset. But, um...fuck you, Terry!
Tobey Maguire: [Laughs]
Andrew Garfield: [Laughs] No, he's still a friend, he knows about it. It's funny. But, yeah, Spider-Man has always been a beautiful symbol for me, and I'm sure for you too and I'd like to keep it so. Because, you know, you can get wrapped up in numbers and whether or not it's a success. The nature of success is something I've been considering a lot lately. But I think all we can do, like you're saying, is stay true to its essence and deliver the best possible story we can which I hope we do...I think we have the potential to.
Andrew goes into more detail about this revelation in an actual conversation with Tobey, which sadly never got recorded, but it was documented by VMan magazines. Andrew says that when he bought a pirated copy of the first movie, he took it back to his "skannky apartment" in North London and watched it with his friend Terry "twice in a row" and even practised Tobey's "final line in the mirror!" after that. We all know what line that was...
"Whatever life holds in store for me, I will never forget these words: 'With Great Power, comes Great Responsibility.' This is my gift, my curse. Who am I? I'm Spider-Man" — Peter Parker, Spider-Man (2002).
Keep in mind that Andrew not only watched the entire movie twice in a row and practised Tobey's final line in the mirror with his friend, but also revealed all this to Tobey.
If that's not enough, here is some video footage from 2013:
Andrew Garfield: That was the most amazing question I've ever recieved, I'm so so sorry to disagree with you, but you're mistaken on all counts, Tobey Maguire is a sex machine in my eyes and still is! And he will always be Spider-Man and you cannot take that away from me! And no matter who fills those shoes it's always going to be Tobey's role, so don't you dare!
Source — The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Comic Con Panel (2013)
Processing video 74a6k5kidm261...
During a comic con panel of TASM 2, a fan asks Andrew Garfield an odd question, I can't be bothered quoting his question because the crowd was booing, laughing and shouting while he was talking, but he makes a very vague comparison between Andrew and Tobey. Andrew, in response, says it's the most amazing question he has ever recieved, but strongly disagrees with the questioner, saying that he's "mistaken on all counts" in that Tobey is "a sex machine" and that Tobey "will always be Spider-Man" and that no one can take that away from him, even going as far as saying "no matter who fills those shoes it's always going to be Tobey's role," telling everyone to dare not take that away from him. What I find really interesting about the way Andrew answered the question is the context; the crowd booed at the guy for making a really vague comparison between Tobey and Andrew, and when Andrew brings up his thoughts on Tobey's portayal (as well as him being a "sex machine" too), he abruptly gets so blunt and clear to his audience about how highly he thinks of Tobey's portrayal, saying that he will always be Spider-Man regardless of who replaces him, and that no one take that opinion away from him. Andrew says this his audience... Who are his own fans. Not only does this speak volumes about how humble Andrew is, it also speaks volumes about how much of a fan he is of Raimi and Maguire. Here's more video footage later on, in 2014:
Andrew Garfield: In the first movie, we were obligated to retreading the origin story which Tobey Maguire and Sam Raimi did so beautifully, but now that it's done, we get to own the character as filmmakers...
Source — The Amazing Spider-Man 2: Andrew Garfield Says 'Screw the Critics'
Processing video uftchabvem261...
In this specific interiew, Andrew mentions the 2002 Sam Raimi Spider-Man movie, saying that Maguire and Raimi did the origin story "so beautifully," when talking about retreating the origin story for Andrew's first movie as Spider-Man. I like how Andrew puts so much emphasis on how well he thought Raimi and Maguire told the origin story in the 2002 Spider-Man movie even though it has very little relevance to the actual subject of the interview.
Those are all the sources I found regarding Marc Webb and Andrew Garfield's thoughts on the Raimi trilogy, and they're overwhelmingly positive. The reason why I wanted to bring all of this to attention is because I felt like they were very obscure sources, I've not seen many people talk about them. Another reason why I wanted to share them here with my fellow Raimimemers is to show them that Marc Webb and Andrew Garfield, much like us, is also a fan of the Raimi trilogy, and Andrew is particularly very adamant about his love for the Raimi trilogy, even saying that they're equally as important as the comics and cartoons, and this deserves to be respected. Andrew was literally used to quote Peter's final lines in Spider-Man 1 before the movie officially came out. Sure, it's illegal, but still pretty cool! Granted, I will have to admit that even though I am not much of a fan of TASM movies or Andrew Garfield's portrayal of the wall crawler, it's got nothing to do with Andrew's performance, but the way his character is written. I completely respect Andrew as an actor and admire his love for the character, and I honestly feel bad for him because he didn't get to play Spider-Man the way he envisioned. But he tried his best, and actually gave a great performance despite the inadequate material and studio interference he was given. Let's all welcome Marc Webb and Andrew Garfield with open arms =D

2020.12.01 17:59 aegeaorgnqergerh Reasons to be cheerful about the vaccine rollout for those concerned over how long it'll take

OK so I've been doing a LOT of reading on this asking various mates, people who work in this sector. This is a major worry people are having right now - it seems so close to being over, yet so far as well. For the first time in this pandemic, I'll admit to being on edge and frustrated, however, I'm very optimistic and reassured. I'll try and break it down into important points:
  1. Politicians and scientists are being pessimistic, not optimistic as far as I can tell. This makes perfect sense and is the correct way for them to behave. Why? Well firstly scientists have a moral duty to assume "everything will go wrong until we can conclusively prove otherwise" which is why although the vaccines were finished months ago their language was still "we may never have a vaccine" even as late as September. Only as it became clear the trials were going well did this language shift. Politicians too have a duty to be cautious on this and pull their punches, because the very real and very big fear now is people think "we've got a vaccine? Fuck it, LETS PARTY!!!" which is the last thing we want right now. As yet, cases remain high even with lockdowns. Now is not the time to let our guard down.
  2. Of the several vaccines in development, we have two major candidates which on their own could vaccinate almost the entire UK. The "first" that was publicised is the Pfizer one, which looks likely to be approved in a day or two. The "issue" with this is the cold storage required (-70C) and the fact it can't be moved often, but this should provide a "front line" vaccine for people in care homes and hospitals. We have 40 million on order and 10 million could be provided by the end of the year. [1] We also have the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine, with tens of millions of doses ready to go already (they were confident enough they started manufacturing it in July) and over 100 million on order. Even with a "two dose" protocol, that's enough for pretty much the whole adult population. [2] The Oxford/AZ vaccine also only requires refrigerated, not frozen, storage, making it easier to distribute. Not that it affects us much, but it's also cheaper.
  3. Both have gone for approval and are expected to be approved soon. Like I say, Pfizer this week [3] with Oxford following shortly afterwards. [4]
  4. The timetable has been posted in various places, and has changed a bit, but the one I keep seeing crop up is the one "leaked" by the HSJ (Health Service Journal) who then made the article paywalled. However it was reported by the BBC (in the "live updates" section so I only have a screenshot) and I've heard from medical professionals that this is what they've been told. This timeline is as follows - - Early Dec - Healthcare workers, care home residents, care home staff - Mid Dec - All those over 80 - Late Dec - Those aged 70 to 80 - Early Jan - Everyone aged 65 to 70, as well all high and moderate risk under 65s. - Mid Jan - Those aged 50 to 65 - Late Jane - Everyone else over the age of 50, likely running through to late March I have a screenshot of the BBC post on this, but Imgur is demanding my mobile number so they can sod off. There is an article here, but like I say, it's now been paywalled. The headline and sub-heading back this up though. [5]
  5. We are going to immense efforts to roll this out. Bear in mind mass swab testing is something we've never done before, and despite shortage of raw supplies worldwide early on, as well as general government incompetence, we've done 41 million to date [6], which is bloody good going. Bear in mind too, most tests need to be manufactured, shipped out, administered, sent to a lab, then the result sent back to the patient. Quite a complex job. Mass vaccination on the other hand is something we done many times for decades, and is much easier - ship vaccine to site (and like I say, loads already manufactured and waiting to go), inject into arm. Done. The flu vaccination programme this year was very different to normal years, and was treated like a military operation in many areas, and they've trained everyone with functioning hands. A receptionist vaccinated my mum. If "desired occupations" (which unfortunately I'm not) you can sign up to help. See here - [7] The military are also getting involved - I've got a few mates who are serving who've been told they're on standby. Indeed in Bristol they've already started work on a mass vaccination centre [8] and places as diverse as cathedrals [9] have been told to make their space available.
  6. So can we get through that many that quickly? That's the question people seem most concerned and pessimistic about and indeed the government are pulling their punches so as not to get people too excited and flouting the rules. A lot of the media are talking about starting by April, but we'll be finished by April, it's just mixing up semantics I think. As you can see above, this is NOT likely to be the case - we'll finish by April and start all non-vulnerable under 50s at the end of Jan. For reference, my local practice manager told me they did 9000 people over three Saturdays (8am - 1pm) across two community centres in November, which sounds about right to hit the late March target for all over 18s, especially given it's a 7-day-a-week operation. Someone did the maths on here once (can't find it now) but please feel free to challenge me on the sums here!
  7. When will it be over then? Well even with a two-dose protocol you're going to see the most vulnerable who account for a vast majority of the death rate vaccinated by Feb. The "sundown" clause means the current tier system expires on Feb 3 [10] suggesting that after that we'll be confident enough we can at the very least move into the arrangement we had in summer. It's certainly the case that once the older groups are vaccinated, hospitalisation and death rates should plummet, meaning restrictions can gradually be removed. I say again that I'd wager late March to mid April will be the removal of all restrictions, but either way, it really will be fucking party time.
  8. Seemingly the only two barriers now are approval and uptake. It seems that approval for both Oxford and Pfizer won't be an issue. Some grumbling over the Oxford dose protocol but this was a mistake in Phase 1 that was quickly rectified. No one I've spoken to can see it being an issue, and indeed the BBC explain it well here [11]. The fact is both are safe and offer good protection, with anything above 55% being fine, and both are much higher. We've got other options on the shelf "just in case" too. Lots of people saying "they won't get one" but while the government are clear it won't be mandatory, many major events/venues and even some European countries that are popular holiday destinations are talking about people having to prove they've had one, so I imagine if its the choice between going to Weatherspoon's and Benidorm or not, the vast majority will change their minds. Very few anti-vaxxers are full on tin-foil hat David Icke followers, and won't take much persuading.
Hope this is of some help, and hope it keeps people positive and hopeful. Lets face it, Jan and Feb suck balls at the best of times, so we're not missing much!
Other personal sources I can't prove and stay relatively anonymous, so feel free not to believe me, but they've certainly reassured me, include my GP, a friend who works in care, a friend of my boss who works in a major hospital, two friends in the army, a friend who works for AstraZeneca and in turn his boss high up on the Oxford team who's been passing me positive info, and my boss' boss who is very high up in the live events industry and is in direct contact with the government (parent company are responsible for some very large events) and they've been told to expect full normality and shows going ahead in April, possibly late April just to be on the safe side.

Notes and FAQ:

Why are you doing this?

Why no Humble Bundle?

Humble have been a fantastic and generous partner for the last 7 years and we're so grateful for the huge amount of work and support they've provided over the years. We're excited to be partnering with Tiltify this year, the platform is built for fundraising and is the best place for twitch streamers to raise money for charity.

Why two weeks instead of the whole month?

There are a lot of reasons. Social distancing is a thing which means certain streams can't happen and in the past we've struggled to fill the second half of Jingle Jam with quality streams, especially from the third week when people start going home to their families. There's a whole load more factors that go in, one example being the clash with the Steam Winter Sale that starts mid-Dec and other bits.

Are there any limited keys this year?
